Ms Asma-Annie Khawatmi
Associate Professor, Department of Architecture

Ms Asma Khawatmi is appointed as an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture effective April 2025. She currently serves as Director of the international postgraduate Master of Arts in Urban Design (MAUD) programme. A French-registered architect and urbanist, her career has been defined by a dual commitment to professional practice and academic engagement, which she has pursued consistently since 2001.

Her practice focuses on urban and architectural project development in both local and international contexts, spanning the public and private sectors. She has cultivated a particular interest in the urban transformations of Western and Southeast Asian cities, where she has led design projects, advised on planning strategies, and contributed to design-based research initiatives.

Since 2007, Asma has taught and conducted research across France, Europe, and Asia, working extensively through collaborations with international universities, experts, and research centres to develop multi-scalar, sustainable urban design methodologies that address the complex challenges of contemporary urbanism.

At NUS, she has played a key role in shaping postgraduate education in urban design for over 17 years. Her teaching and research address pressing global issues such as climate change, rapid urbanisation, and resource scarcity, with a strong focus on Post-Carbon Cities, urban regeneration, megacity development, and resilience.

Her research and publications include several articles on “Shophouse typologies” in Asia and the concept of the “productive city” in Singapore.
