The 'Cities of Tomorrow (CoT)' Clay Sintering project, a collaborative effort between HDB and NUS, won the prestigious 2023 Minister's Award (Ministry of National Development (MND)) on 8 Aug 2023.

The NUS team led by Dr Chew Soon Hoe (Assistant Professor) as PI, along with Dr Subramanian Sathyamoorthy and Dr. Koh Juan Wei (both are Research Fellows) together with the HDB team comprising Ng Say Cheong (Group Director), Tan Yeow Chong (Director), Teo Cheng Soon (Deputy director), Charmaine Koh, Grace Foo, and Lim Jin Kai have successfully developed a ‘mid-industry scale’ prototype to convert the excavated marine clay to a ‘Sand-like’ material. It is a sustainable solution as it recycles the ‘no or low economic valued’ marine clay, and converts it into a “high value” sand-like material.

NUS -HDB team were awarded MND’s “2023 Minister's Award” for pushing the boundaries of innovation to develop a first-of-its-kind prototype to convert soft clay into a ’sand-like’ material. This breakthrough technology had the potential to disrupt traditional methods of sand sourcing, reducing reliance on imports and enabling strategic land creation to meet the growing demands of urban development sustainably.
