Congratulations to the faculty and staff of the College of Design and Engineering awarded National Day Awards on the occasion of Singapore’s 59th National Day. The Awards are presented in recognition of various forms of merit and service to Singapore.

Asst Prof Wang Xinchao honoured at University Awards

Asst Prof Wang’s research interests span the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and signal processing.

Assistant Professor Wang Xinchao (Electrical and Computer Engineering), a renowned expert recognised internationally in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, has been honoured with the Young Researcher Award at the annual NUS University Awards.

The award, presented at a ceremony held at the Conrad Hotel, Orchard on the evening of 30 August, recognises up-and-coming NUS researchers whose work is extending the frontiers of knowledge in their respective fields.

“It is my absolute honour to receive the NUS Young Research Award,” Asst Prof Wang said. “I am very proud of being a member of ECE, CDE, and NUS, from which I have received all the support I need to pursue the research I am passionate about. I will spare no effort in further advancing the frontiers of machine learning and giving back to the NUS community.”

The annual University Awards honour members of the NUS community who, through their consistently high performance and resolute commitment, set new benchmarks in the areas of education, research and service. The Young Researcher Award is given to researchers under the age of 40 to recognise their outstanding research achievements and with a specific focus on research impact and quality.

CDE researchers honoured with prestigious SNAS Fellowships

Congratulations to Prof Chen Xiaoyuan (Biomedical Engineering) and Adj Prof Loh Xian Jun (Materials Science and Engineering) on being presented with fellowships awarded by the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS). 

Prof Chen has been elected as SNAS Fellow for his contributions to the fields of molecular imaging and nanomedicine; whilst Prof Loh has been honoured for his work in the field of thermogelling polymers, from molecular understanding to clinical applications. 

The two are are among six individuals from NUS to have been presented with SNAS fellowships for 2024.

Prof Hu Jiangyong appointed as International Water Association (IWA) Distinguished Fellow

Congratulations to Professor Hu Jiangyong (Civil and Environmental Engineering) on her election as a Distinguished Fellow of the International Water Association (IWA).

The prestigious fellowship, which recognises individuals for their long-term extraordinary contributions to the global water sector, was announced at the IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition held recently in Toronto, Canada.

“I am deeply honoured by this recognition given by IWA," said Prof Hu. "I thank very much our team, environmental and water community in NUS and in Singapore, our collaborators in the world for the strong support and collective efforts towards environmental sustainability."

Emeritus Professor Yong Kwet Yew re-appointed as Scientific Panel Member to the Ministry of National Development

Emeritus Professor Yong Kwet Yew was re-appointed as a Scientific Panel Member to the Ministry of National Development from 1 Jun 2024 to 31 May 2026. The Scientific Panel will advise on the strategic areas relating to Research & Development (R&D), Science & Technology (S&T) and Innovation & Enterprise (I&E) for the Built Environment (BE) sector and the Cities of Tomorrow programme. 

Dr Guo Yang appointed Associate Editor in Journal of Environmental Management

PYP Assistant Professor Dr Guo Yang has been appointed Associate Editor for the Journal of Environmental Management from August 2024. This appointment is in recognition of his research experience in the fields of eco-industrial development and sustainable infrastructure systems.

Recognition for Assistant Professor Dr Prateek Bansal

PYP Assistant Professor Dr Prateek Bansal was elected a Board Member of the International Association of Travel Behaviour Research (IATBR) from 2024 to 2027.

He also received a "Prestigious Foreign Scholar" award from Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea. It includes an award of around SGD 3000 and an invited lecture at SNU.
