CDE hosts Rising Stars Women in Engineering Workshop

For academics “one of the great advantages over jobs in industry is that we have more freedom to choose to work on things we have a passion for, which is also the key to having a real impact on the society and community or having a meaningful career,” Dr Yang Ying (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) told the recent Rising Stars Women in Engineering (RSE) Workshop.
Held at CDE from 17-19 November, the workshop brought together talented young women professionals in engineering disciplines from around the world. RSE aims to spark discussion amongst young female professionals through a series of plenary sessions and keynote lectures, panel discussions and mentoring sessions.

Communication ‘is key to innovation success’

"Effective communication is often the bridge between an innovative idea and its acceptance."
The Honourable Dr Sethuraman Panchanathan, Director of the US National Science Foundation (NSF), shared insights with the CDE community in his recent guest lecture on accelerating the frontiers of science and technology, organised in collaboration with National Research Foundation Singapore.
Speaking to an audience of faculty, students, and research professionals, he emphasised that even the most brilliant ideas can fail without clear and convincing communication.
Dr Panchanathan also encouraged researchers to embrace failure as a natural part of progress and highlighted the importance of collaborating across disciplines to solve global challenges.
“Never give up the can-do spirit,” he advised aspiring researchers in the audience. “You can't let anything let you down.”

Forum for Teachers: Preparing students for university admissions and learning in Design and Engineering

On 8 November 2024, the College of Design and Engineering (CDE) hosted a forum at the Innovation and Design Hub attended by 17 teachers from secondary and pre-tertiary schools. The forum’s intent is to introduce CDE’s unique learning environment to them, as well as prepare students for admission into CDE.
CDE faculty members representing Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture and Landscape Architecture addressed key topics such as aptitude-based admissions, scholarships, and the transition from pre-tertiary education to university, providing attendees with valuable insights and strategies to better prepare their students for university.
The teachers also had the unique opportunity to engage directly with CDE faculty members and gain firsthand insights into the wide range of academic and student life support available to students in CDE.
This forum represents an important step in bridging the gap between pre-tertiary and university education, equipping teachers with the tools and knowledge necessary to prepare and support prospective students for success at CDE.

Empowering Educators: AI Workshop for enhancing teaching and learning

On 14 November 2024, 61 secondary and pre-tertiary MOE teachers from STEM and non-STEM backgrounds participated in CDE’s workshop titled "Artificial Intelligence for Education: Teaching & Learning with AI" held at E7. Led by instructor Dr Kate Lee Sangwon from the Engineering and Design Innovation Centre, the workshop aimed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge to integrate AI tools, such as ChatGPT, into their teaching practices.
Throughout the day, the teachers engaged in practical sessions focused on AI tools that can be tailored to their teaching subjects including Design & Technology, Sciences and Languages. These tools can be used to address key challenges, such as guiding students in the responsible use of AI and leveraging its potential to foster deeper learning and engagement. Participants left with actionable strategies and ideas for incorporating AI into their teaching, ready to apply these tools to benefit their students.
