Assistant Professor Pieremanuele Canepa (Material Science and Engineering) has been awarded the American Chemical Society (ACS) Chemistry of Materials 2023 Best Paper Award for a groundbreaking study on batteries.
His paper, Devil is in the Defects: Electronic Conductivity in Solid Electrolytes, challenges the traditional approach to solid-state batteries, treating them not just as ion conductors but also as electronic semiconductors.
Asst Prof Canepa collaborated with a diverse team of researchers in Singapore, the US and the Netherlands, and their work has been recognised for its innovative approach to addressing both ionic and electronic conductivities simultaneously.
The fresh perspective taken by the paper is expected to improve the design of solid electrolytes, making all-solid-state batteries more efficient.
According to the journal, the award honours the authors of an article published in 2021 or 2022 that has outstanding influence in the field of materials chemistry. It also aims to highlight the importance of collaborative efforts across disciplines in advancing scientific breakthroughs.
