Engineering considerations for proposed Pulau Tekong Undersea Tunnels

Assoc Prof Chew Soon Hoe discusses the engineering considerations behind the proposed undersea tunnels linking mainland Singapore to Pulau Tekong.

Asst Prof Chew Soon Hoe(opens in new tab), Deputy Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering(opens in new tab), noted that, unlike the Marina Coastal Expressway, a “cut and cover” approach is unlikely to be suitable for the proposed mainland-Tekong tunnels. He explained that the tunnels would need to be longer and built deeper below the seabed, while more complex soil conditions and vessel traffic in the Changi-Tekong area would make construction more challenging.
