Professor Li Jun (Provost’s Chair Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering) has received the 2026 International Award from The Society of Polymer Science, Japan (SPSJ).

The SPSJ International Award recognises international researchers who have made outstanding contributions to polymer science and engineering, as well as to academic exchange with Japan. Conferred on no more than four recipients each year, it is the Society’s highest honour for international researchers.

Prof Li received the award for his research on “Supramolecular Polymers and Hydrogels for Nanomedicine and Sustainability Applications”.

His research focuses on developing advanced polymer materials with properties that can be tailored for applications in areas such as drug and gene delivery, regenerative medicine and environmental sustainability. These include supramolecular polymers and hydrogels, whose structures and properties can be designed to respond to different conditions and perform specific functions.

“I am deeply honoured to be the first recipient from Singapore to receive the SPSJ International Award since its inception in 1994,” said Prof Li. “It is a strong international recognition of the innovative research pursued in our laboratory at NUS, and reflects Singapore’s global standing in polymer science and engineering.”

He said the recognition also highlighted the potential for advances in polymer science to contribute to two major global challenges: human health and environmental sustainability.

“Through the continued development of supramolecular polymers and hydrogels, we are highly motivated to develop novel functional materials that can provide real-world solutions to these challenges,” he said.

Prof Li also credited the award to the collective efforts of his research group and collaborators.

“This recognition reflects the contributions of my entire team, including my students, staff members and collaborators. I am deeply grateful for their dedication and hard work over many years. The strong international collaborations we have cultivated have also played an invaluable role throughout my research journey,” he said.

Established in 1951, SPSJ brings together around 10,000 members from academia, industry and government and promotes research and collaboration across polymer science and engineering.

Prof Li delivered a keynote lecture on his research at the 75th SPSJ Symposium on Macromolecules in Tokyo on 2 September. He was presented with the International Award by SPSJ President Prof Masami Kamigaito at a ceremony the following day.
