FAQs
Who is eligible to apply?
- CDE employees with significant teaching role and impact are welcome to apply. However, applicants who have previously received this grant are permanently ineligible to reapply. The Chair of CTEC would exercise discretion on the eligibility of applicants.
I have applied before. Am I eligible to apply again?
- As per our guidelines, those who have previously received an award are not eligible to reapply, and this restriction has no time limit.
What is the maximum grant amount?
- There is no cap on the budget for each proposal, as long as it falls within the limit of $100,000 set aside for this grant. However, it should be noted that the intent is to fund multiple proposals.
How will the awarded funds be given to the grant recipients?
- The awarded funds will be disbursed directly to a project WBS to be drawn by the Principal Investigator for the project. Specific details will be provided to the Principal Investigator upon approval of the grant application.
If I have applied for the Teaching Enhancement Grant - Learning Improvement Projects (TEG-LIP), which is managed by the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT), can I still apply for the CDE Teaching Transformation Grant (CDE TTG) within the same fiscal year?
- It is not possible to apply for both the CDE TTG and the TEG-LIP for the same project. Applicants must select only one grant to apply for per project to ensure fair and equitable distribution of resources.
How long is the project duration?
- The maximum duration of grant is 12 months.
Can there be more than one Principal Investigator (PI)?
- No, there can only be one Principal Investigator (PI), and this role is limited to full-time teaching faculty members whose primary appointment is with the College of Design and Engineering (CDE).
Can my Co-Investigator (Co-I) be someone from outside the College of Design and Engineering (CDE) or outside NUS?
- No, the Co-Investigator (Co-I) must be a full-time teaching faculty member with a primary appointment at the College of Design and Engineering (CDE), so external collaborators or those outside CDE / NUS are not eligible for this role. However, the grant can be used to engage professional expertise for staff training, allowing for external collaboration in that capacity.
Is it possible to request an extension of the maximum timeline of the grant?
- The Principal Investigator should make every effort to complete the project by the project completion date as all projects must complete within the grant validity period of 12 months. The grant will no longer be valid after the completion date of the project.
Does each proposed project / application form apply to only one course, or can it be across multiple courses?
- Each proposed project can be designed to apply to either a single course or across multiple courses. This flexibility allows applicants to tailor their projects to best fit their educational goals and the needs of their students. Only one application form is needed to be submitted if the proposed project applies across multiple courses.
Can the grant be used to hire student helpers?
- Yes, the grant can be used to hire student helpers, specifically through the NUS Student Work Scheme (NSWS) for NUS Undergraduate & Graduate Students. Details on the NSWS for NUS Undergraduate & Graduate Students can be found here. Please use the recommended hourly rates. Other employment arrangements, such as contingent workers via the Office of Human Resources (OHR), are not covered.
Where can information about NSWS be found?
- Details on the NUS Student Work Scheme (NSWS) for NUS Undergraduate & Graduate Students can be found here. Please use the recommended hourly rates.
Two student helpers have been identified, but one will be on an internship and the other will be away on NUS Overseas College (NOC) during the project period. Although they can work outside their internship hours or outside NOC activities, the NSWS application process seems to require students to be available and not on internship or overseas. Is there a possible workaround or alternative arrangement that can be made in this situation?
- While it is generally not advisable for students on internship or NOC to concurrently hold NSWS roles, exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis, provided the students can demonstrate their ability to balance commitments and receive support from their internship administrator / NOC. Please request the students to obtain a letter of support or endorsement from the internship administrator / NOC. Kindly note that if the student on internship is on Leave of Absence (LOA), the student will not be able to take on any NSWS jobs since NSWS is only open to full-time active status students based on records in EduRec.

Who owns the equipment / software purchased with the CDE TTG fund?

Is IRB review and approval required for the proposed project?
