MOE Engineering and Tech Scholarship Workshop 2025

NUS MOE Engineering and Tech Programme Scholarship (ETPS) 2025-397

The future changemakers and innovators of tomorrow from the MOE Engineering and Tech Programme Scholarship had the opportunity to learn, design, and build right here at CDE. From 6-10 January 2025, 100 ETPS scholars from pre-university institutions attended the 2025 MOE ETPS Workshop organised by CDE and co-sponsored by The James Dyson Foundation.

Through hands-on workshops, lab sessions and tours, the students explored three critical themes
- Healthcare Technology
- Energy & Sustainability
- Climate Change & Coastal Protection

As they grew their knowledge and skills over the five days, they were tasked to develop solutions for problem statements in their selected theme. Guided by mentors and facilitators from CDE, the teams built solar-powered cooling systems, prototyped integrated healthcare devices, and reimagined coastal defences for Singapore.

One scholar shared, “This workshop has allowed me to see the other types of engineering beyond what I intend to pursue, making me more interested in engineering.”

Another reflected, “I used to think engineering fields only relied on pure sciences, but I've come to learn that engineering is a multi-disciplinary field that requires skills from many areas for effective solutions to be developed.”

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who brought this programme to life, including the following departments and their faculty members and student volunteers:

  • Faculty Leads: Dr Vincent Lee, Dr Paul Ong, and Associate Professor Stephen Tay, for driving the conceptualisation and planning.
  • Judges: Associate Professor Teo Chiang Juay, Associate Professor Lilian Chee, Ruihe Cai (Dyson), and others, for their expert guidance.
  • CDE Instructors & Teaching Assistants: For sharing your expertise and inspiring the next generation of innovators.
  • CDE Student Mentors: For your unwavering support and encouragement.
  • Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Built Environment, and the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre, for hosting impactful workshops.

“Don’t just study — create! Hobby projects (DIY robots, smart home gadgets, automated systems) prove you can turn theory into functional tech. Employers crave problem-solvers who ship real-world solutions.” These were the words shared by Mr Kashyap Chandrasekar, Director of NPI Robotics at Dyson.

Dyson was one of several employers who were present at the recent Internship and Career Fair (ICF) hosted by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering on 22 January 2025. The event brought together 700 students and 20 companies for a packed day of networking, learning, and career exploration.

The fair featured a diverse lineup of companies offering roles in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, IoT, and sustainable engineering. Students had the unique opportunity to interact directly with recruiters and company representatives, engaging in meaningful discussions about internships, career roles, and the skills required to excel in these domains.

A series of insightful talks were also held on 20 January 2025 in conjunction with ICF. These sessions covered various timely topics, including Cloud Security, Electronic Miniaturisation, Generative AI, and AI Hardware, providing attendees with valuable knowledge about emerging technologies and their applications.
