"Tonight, we are here to celebrate the connections between the past and present, between academia and industry, and across the generations of CEE graduates," said Professor Richard Liew, Head of Department at Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE).
His words set the tone for a meaningful evening on 23 May 2025, as CEE launched its 70th anniversary celebrations, a series of events to celebrate its legacy, community, and shared vision for the future, with the CEE 70th Anniversary Walk.

Over 250 faculty members, students, staff, alumni, donors, and industry partners came together for a 3-km journey across the NUS campus. The walk featured stops at sites including the CDE campus, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Computing, and the Central Library.
Through this event, alumni reconnected with old friends, faculty members shared stories, and students gained a deeper appreciation for CEE's rich history and vibrant community.
Eight alumni from the Class of 1978 were part of the contingent. They recalled the wonderful time they had during their final year as the first batch of engineering students at Kent Ridge Campus. Before the walk, they visited the Engineering Auditorium and were briefed on the latest developments of the CEE curriculum, including the increased choice and flexibility of pathways, all of which are designed to prepare resilient engineers of the future.
“To mark the 70th anniversary of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, we want to celebrate our achievements in contributing to our nation’s infrastructure while striving to innovate for the future of the built environment," said Assistant Professor Chew Soon Hoe, Chairman of the CEE 70th Anniversary Committee.
He also highlighted the importance of well-being in shaping resilient engineers, adding: “To achieve our goals, we need to be physically healthy, socially connected, and mentally resilient. This walk was a wonderful opportunity for exercise and team bonding within the CEE family.”
CDE thrives through the strength and diversity of its departments, with faculty members and students connected by a desire to create real-world impact. CEE's 70-year journey stands as a testament to this with its story of achievement, collaboration and progress.
Here's to inspiring innovation and nurturing future-ready engineers for generations to come!
