CDE@NUS Open House 2026 brought together prospective students and visitors for a full day of discovering what it’s like to learn at CDE, from exploring programmes and facilities to trying out hands-on activities and speaking directly with students and faculty.

At the programme booths, many visitors left with a clearer sense of direction. Reynard from St Andrew’s Junior College shared, “I’ve learned so much and now understand Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) better. There are many industries where I could apply the skill sets from ISE.” Others were struck by how broad and interdisciplinary engineering can be. After learning more about Infrastructure and Project Management (IPM), prospective student Jia Nan noted, “One thing I found interesting about IPM is that it involves different stakeholders and engineers.”

Workshops throughout the day turned concepts into something tangible. Visitors built and tested earthquake-resistant towers, experimented with mini F1 cars powered by conductive solutions, explored circuits with audio signal shaping, and even got a look at miniaturised bioresorbable pacemakers.

Beyond the booths and workshops, guided tours offered a behind-the-scenes look at CDE spaces. At the Design Learning and Facilities Tour, visitors explored studios and viewed past design and architecture works, from sketches and drawings to models and prototypes. Other tours brought visitors into laboratories, including the Mechanical Engineering labs, where robots were in motion.

Over at the Robotics and Innovation Showcase, Jishree from polytechnic tried Build-in-VR and reflected on what it could enable: “We can use VR not only for construction site simulations, but also to draw and do drafting instead of going on site.”

From first questions to final conversations, the day offered visitors a closer look at the people, projects, and possibilities across CDE, and a better sense of where their interests could take them next.

Wolfram is FIVE!

The CDE community came together to celebrate our beloved mascot with a cosy cake-cutting moment and a Kahoot challenge. Associate Professor Darren Chian, Vice Dean (Student Life), hosted the challenge. Students put their Wolfram knowledge to the test, and the top scorers went home with adorable Wolfram plushies and pins.

Beyond the celebrations, Wolfram continues to stand for what makes CDE special: a vibrant, welcoming community. By promoting awareness of student life services, Wolfram helps engage students, alumni, staff, and faculty, fostering a warm and inclusive environment.

Happy fifth birthday, Wolfram! Here’s to more laughter, good vibes, and many more CDE memories together.

ISE Day 2026: Bridging students and alumni

ISE Day Alumni

Industrial Systems and Engineering (ISE) Day and Alumni Series 2026 is an annual flagship networking and career-sharing event organised by the ISE Club, bringing together current students and alumni.

Held on 9 February 2026, the event features student and alumni sharing segments, where speakers from industries such as operations, supply chain, finance and technology share insights on academics, internships and career pathways. The session concludes with a networking segment, providing undergraduates with opportunities to connect with alumni and gain practical perspectives on life after graduation.

Promoting staff well-being through active living initiatives

UHC-CDE Staff Interest Groups

Five CDE teams completed the challenge between July and December 2025. The staff participated in a variety of physical activities, including badminton, pickleball, gardening, and brisk walking. The collaboration with University Health Centre brings together staff members who share common interests in active lifestyles, helping them maintain their physical activity and enhancing their overall health and fitness.

Walk the sustainability trail: NUS campus walking tour

Sustainability Trail 2

A team of CDE staff joined Associate Professor Johannes Widodo from the Department of Architecture for a campus walking tour, exploring how Kent Ridge has become a showcase of Sustainable NUS initiatives. The tour highlighted key sites including the Engineering and SDE building precincts, the Nasi Ulam edible forest garden, the Central Library, and the revitalised Yusoff Ishak House.

It traces the university’s shift from early terrain-responsive modernism to today’s net-zero, wellness-centred, and regenerative designs. Emphasising a shift in mindset toward passive environmental systems, carbon-neutral operations, and healthier learning environments, the tour demonstrates how architecture, planning, landscape stewardship, and community engagement shape a resilient campus that can inspire broader societal transformation.

Building resilience through business continuity planning

BCP Workshop

On 27 February 2026, CDE partnered with the Office of Risk Management and Compliance (ORMC) to conduct a Business Continuity Planning (BCP) workshop for department heads, admin leads and BCP coordinators within the Dean’s Office. The session provided a structured, hands-on walkthrough of the BCP template, helping teams deepen their understanding of crisis preparedness.

The workshop concluded with group presentations that demonstrated clarity, thoughtfulness and strong operational insight. It strengthened collective readiness while fostering meaningful exchanges among colleagues, leaving participants more confident in navigating potential challenges.
