Beyond the studio, an alumni sharing night
Beyond the Studio was a night of reconnection across batches of both former and current students, held on the evening of 2 July at the usual haunt of all Industrial Design students — the SDE4 Industrial Design Studio.
Organised by AlumnID, our alumni returned to share their experiences navigating first jobs, career paths and life after graduation. Through Pecha Kucha-style presentations and networking over dinner, student attendees had the opportunity to gain valuable insights while building connections with our alumni community.
Thank you to the alumni speakers and organisers — Lucas Cheng (Class of 2023), Aileen Ooi (Class of 2023), Johnathan Low Kai Yi (Class of 2024), Srikesh Sundaresan (Class of 2024), Wing Chan (Class of 2024), Celeste Seah (Class of 2024), Isabelle Kirkwood (Class of 2025), and Jerome Wong (Class of 2025) — for making the evening such a meaningful one.
30th Reunion of ECE Class of 1996
Nearly 80 alumni and guests gathered on 11 July 2026 to celebrate the 30th Reunion of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Electrical Engineering Class of 1996. Held at Eureka Taste, a restaurant owned by an EE96 alumnus, the evening was a joyful homecoming marked by laughter, shared memories and renewed friendships.
The reunion welcomed many distinguished guests, including Professors Liew Ah Choy, Yeo Swee Ping and Chong Tow Chong, who had taught and inspired many members of the cohort. They were joined by Professor Biplab Sikdar, Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Professor Arthur Tay, Vice Dean (Alumni Relations), College of Design and Engineering (CDE); Ms Lynette Lai from CDE Development Office; and Ms Curina Sim from NUS Giving.
Against the backdrop of good food, fun games and sparkling conversations, classmates reconnected with friends they had not seen in years, reminiscing about their student days while celebrating the journeys that had brought them back together. The event also saw several alumni joining virtually from overseas and one who travelled back that day for the reunion.
The reunion also reflected the class’s enduring commitment to giving back. The EE96 cohort contributed nearly S$68,000 to establish a bursary, which will support future students in the College of Design and Engineering. In addition, a calligraphy artwork by the Venerable Song Nian was auctioned off during the event, with proceeds going towards the bursary and artwork donated to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a commemorative gift.
Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, the organising committee shared: “This reunion was about bringing us back to a time when we were simply classmates. It was an opportunity to celebrate the paths that crossed three decades ago, reconnect through shared memories, and extend those connections into the future. We also wanted to give back to our alma mater, so that many more generations of students can walk through the same halls of Electrical Engineering at NUS and create their own lifelong friendships and memories.”
Thirty years on, the bonds forged in lecture theatres, laboratories and project rooms continue to endure — demonstrating that the NUS Electrical Engineering Class of 1996 remains connected not only by shared memories, but also by a shared commitment to one another and to future generations.
