Barcelona's Parlour Gardens exhibition showcases Assoc Prof Gareth Doherty and Critical Landscapes Design Lab

Medinascapes: Associate Professor Gareth Doherty and Critical Landscapes Design Lab

Associate Professor Gareth Doherty and the Critical Landscapes Design Lab are featured in Parlour Gardens, an international exhibition on view at the Botanic Garden of Barcelona from June to October 2026. The exhibition revisits the jardinets de saló, first conceived in 1926 by Nicolau M. Rubió i Tudurí, Llorenç Artigas, and Raoul Dufy. These miniature ceramic landscapes are reinterpreted a century later by 13 leading landscape architects from around the world, offering contemporary perspectives on landscape design through crafted, small-scale environments. 

Assoc Prof Doherty and the Lab’s contribution, Medinascapes, reimagines the rooftops of the Medina of Tunis as an interconnected landscape. The project was developed with contributions from lab members Rawan Alsaffar and Supriya Ambwani, with the model of Dar Ben Gacem and its surrounding context crafted by B3DC (Barcelona 3D Ceramics). 

UWS STEM Fest 2026: empowering young women in design and engineering

“Meeting so many bright young minds was incredibly meaningful, especially young women who share that curiosity but may not yet know where to begin. I hope our projects showed them that they, too, can be part of shaping the future,” shared Shruti Moovendran (Year 3, Chemical Engineering with a second major in Innovation & Design).  

Shruti was among CDE students and staff representing the college at the United Women Singapore (UWS) STEM Fest 2026 on 27 June at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre. This annual festival is part of UWS’ flagship Girl2Pioneers STEM Programme that aims to inspire young women and girls to pursue careers in STEM. 

Centred around the theme “Shaping Tomorrow, Today”, this year's festival brought together students, parents, educators and industry professionals to explore how today's ideas and innovations can shape a better future. CDE students and staff took part in showcasing innovations and shared how engineering and design are creating real-world impact across industries.  

CDE’s booth also welcomed Guest of Honour Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, who engaged with students and staff and learned more about the projects on display. 

Shruti presented NaSoBATT, a smart battery system for mobility scooters designed to provide longer battery life while improving safety during charging and everyday use. Harini Ravichandran (Year 4, Materials Science and Engineering with a second major in Innovation & Design) demonstrated a research project that combines two advanced microscopes to study ultra-thin materials at the nanoscale. The project supports the development of future electronic devices and advanced technologies. 

Reflecting on the value of inspiring the next generation, Harini said, “Watching children as young as five become fascinated by the tiny scales we work with reminded me how much wonder lies at the heart of STEM. Their curiosity reassured me of the future ahead and reminded me that we should never lose that same spark.” 

Monthly volunteering opportunity that makes a difference

CDE's ongoing monthly food-packing sessions with Food From The Heart (FFTH) help support families in need and strengthen community connections.  

During the sessions, volunteers will sort and pack non-perishable food items into food packs, each containing 10 to 12 essential items such as rice, cooking oil, oats, biscuits, and canned sardines. This ensures that families have access to nutritious food, while offering volunteers a wonderful way to build friendships and feel part of a caring community as they work towards a worthy cause.
