Class of Graduate Certificate in Technology for Environmental Sustainability (GC-TES),2020

What made you choose the course in NUS over other courses?

Despite being born and bred in a tropical climate, I am very much fond of winters and nature. I chose GC-TES as I'm a firm believer in combating climate change before the polar caps melt! As a testament to that, when I travel to cold countries in winter it is always by land instead of flights to reduce my carbon footprint.

What do you like most about this course in NUS?

The GC-TES offers a chance for technical personnel in the environmental field to further enhance the understanding of their work. Therefore, offering entrepreneurs like myself, various and innovative business opportunities.

I recall studying the chapter on Advanced Ecologically Engineered Systems (AEES) or more commonly known as " Living Machine" in the ESE5901B module. It was one of the many modules that introduced us to decentralised wastewater treatment systems which I feel has massive economic opportunities.

How has the course helped you with your everyday/work life?

As chemists, our services include of doing analysis to produce laboratory data for our clients , mostly engineers.  These data will help the engineers to assess and execute the appropriate process control measures for smooth operation of municipal wastewater treatment plants. This course has enabled me to appreciate my own work from an engineer’s point-of-view.

Any tips for incoming and current students?

When in doubt always ask your lecturer and discuss with your classmates. Be open to sharing your views and ideas too.
