Dr Tong Xuneng completed his PhD in 2023 in the area of TRANSPORT AND FATE MODELLING OF EMERGING CONTAMINANTS IN SINGAPORE FRESH AND COASTAL WATERS. He integrated the fundamental mechanisms of physical, chemical and biological processes, elucidating the key factors which influence the behaviour and transport of emerging contaminants such as plastics, bisphenol A and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, etc. At the same time, he developed hybrid models that incorporate both data-driven and process-based models to further enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the prediction outcomes. Dr Tong has demonstrated exceptional promise in research that is impactful to national development and society, as his modelling works have been successfully applied in local reservoirs and coastal waters, contributing to water quality improvement.
Dr Tong has demonstrated outstanding academic performance. He published 6 journal papers in reputable journals, 1 book chapter in Oceans & Health, and filed 1 patent from his PhD research work. He was actively involved in organizing SIWW conference as session co-chair and poster judge in 2024. He was awarded the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad in 2023. He also won First Prize in the 1st CHINA-ASEAN Dam Safety Science Popularization Contest in 2021.
Dr Tong is currently a research fellow under NUS NERI. He is co-founder of a NUS spin-off company (Aquashield Solutions) from NUS Enterprise. He was appointed an early career Editorial Board Member of the journal Ecosystem Health & Sustainability and is a journal reviewer of the Journal of Hazardous Materials.
