Research by the NUS Safety and Resilience Research Unit (SaRRU) shows that many designers and industry practitioners do not know how to apply design for safety (DfS) concepts to improve construction safety and health. There is confusion between DfS review and risk assessments by contractors. One possible solution is to provide guidelines and examples to plug the current competency gap. However, existing DfS Libraries provided by IES was focused on mechanical, electrical and architectural design risks. Given this problem, SaRRU is working with the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) and other stakeholders to develop a DfS Library for Construction related DfS Risks.

This presentation aims to provide an overview of the DfS Library of Construction related DfS Risks and examples from the DfS Library to illustrate:

  1. difference between design risk and construction hazard
  2. difference between contractor risk assessment and design for safety review
  3. detailed design for safety review is needed as opposed to compliance to existing codes and standards

The presentation will also introduce the SafeSim Design training game, which NUS develops to train designers on DfS concepts.

Here's the IES flyer for the webinar information.
