MSc (MOTI) student - Tan Li Yin Valarine

1. What inspired you to pursue MOTI?
My professional journey over the past few years has continually reinforced the importance of embracing a growth mindset and stepping beyond familiar boundaries. Seeking to deepen my capabilities, I decided to take on a master's program that could elevate my engineering background with essential business and management acumen. MOTI is perfectly aligned with this ambition. I view MOTI as an "MBA for Engineers"—a program that provides the essential content of an MBA but specifically tailored for engineers working in the dynamic technology landscape.

2. In what ways has MOTI benefited you?
MOTI has been a powerful catalyst in bridging my engineering foundation with the demands of the business world. The program's comprehensive modules in areas like IP management, technology strategy, entrepreneurship, marketing, and finance offered a unique blend of management and technology. This provided strategic insight, practical application, and a strong technological core. Through numerous case studies, real-world applications, and group projects involving company analysis, I gained a much deeper and broader understanding of various technology industries, significantly expanding my initial limited perspective.

3. Could you tell us about your current role and organisations? What do you find exciting about your work, and are there any impactful contributions you’d like to highlight?

Currently, I serve as a Product Engineer at Hewlett Packard Singapore, where my primary responsibility is to safeguard the outgoing product quality of large-format print supplies. This position has provided an excellent environment to develop my leadership abilities through leading various scale projects and issue resolution efforts. The business acumen acquired through MOTI has transformed my approach, enabling me to evaluate projects and issues with a holistic perspective. This allows me to consistently pursue innovative solutions that effectively balance stringent quality standards with vital business considerations.

4. Are there any interesting aspects about yourself you’d like to share? How do you envision your holistic growth over the next three years, and what are your career aspirations?

An interesting aspect of my personality is my drive to challenge and defy the status quo. Looking ahead, I envision my holistic growth over the next three years to involve continuously stepping beyond my comfort zone and embracing new, complex assignments. This will be crucial for further developing my leadership and soft skills. My career aspiration is to evolve into a leadership mentor, leveraging the valuable lessons I've learned to guide and empower newer engineers. I aim to inspire and help them identify their career paths and achieve success, fostering a collaborative environment where we can all grow together.
