Shan Chunyu was primarily drawn to the Data Analytics (DA) specialization offered by the Master of Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) program. During her career planning phase after her bachelor’s degree, Chunyu realised that she had a strong passion for both data analytics and supply chain management. With the current boom in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models, Chunyu firmly believes that the deep integration of data science and supply chain is the future of the industry.
Yang Keat chose to pursue ISE because of its versatile nature. Before university, he was not entirely sure which career path he wanted to take, but he saw that ISE offered the perfect balance between technical skills and business acumen. What inspired him most was seeing how seniors from the program went on to thrive in such a wide range of industries—this flexibility gave him the confidence that ISE would open up many possibilities.
In recent years, Leslie has witnessed how global disruptions such as COVID-19, geopolitical tensions, and rising tariffs have placed immense pressure on businesses. For a resource-scarce nation like Singapore, securing raw materials, managing costs, and ensuring resilience are critical for survival. These challenges sparked Leslie’s interest in understanding supply chain dynamics, leading him to enrol in the MSc in Supply Chain Management programme at the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management, National University of Singapore.
Xin Ying’s inspiration to pursue Industrial & Systems Engineering stemmed from an interest in optimization and efficiency. She has always been drawn to complex systems—whether in supply chains or business processes—and the challenge of making them smarter, faster, and more resilient. The ISE program’s unique blend of engineering fundamentals, data analytics, and human-centric systems thinking was the perfect fit. It promised the toolkit to not only identify bottlenecks but to design and implement data-driven, automated solutions that create tangible value.
As an Industrial and Systems Engineering alumnus (Class of 2019) with nearly five years of experience spearheading digital transformation at a leading multi-purpose port operator in Singapore, Phang Fu Chun was drawn back to pursue the Master of Science in Maritime Technology and Management (MTM) programme for AY2024/25. The programme’s joint hosting between the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management (ISEM) and Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS) offered a unique blend of technological expertise and management principles to advance his career.
Ashref Afshin graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science where he gained extensive knowledge in ship operations and technology, maritime law, IMO conventions, cargo and marine communications, environmental science, navigation, voyage planning, and collision prevention. He joined the MSc Maritime Technology & Management programme to further develop his skills as a professional in the field of the maritime industry.
Valarine’s professional journey over the past few years has continually reinforced the importance of embracing a growth mindset and stepping beyond familiar boundaries. Seeking to deepen her capabilities, she decided to take on a master’s program that could elevate her engineering background with essential business and management acumen. MOTI is perfectly aligned with this ambition. She views MOTI as an “MBA for Engineers”—a program that provides the essential content of an MBA but is specifically tailored for engineers working in the dynamic technology landscape.
With a background in an interdisciplinary undergraduate programme, Xinyue has always found systems thinking to be essential, particularly in understanding, designing, and operating complex systems. She chose the National University of Singapore’s MSc ISE programme because it strikes the perfect balance between rigorous engineering methodologies and flexible real-world applications. The programme cuts across industries such as healthcare, finance, logistics, and IT, offering students both breadth and depth. It is an ideal programme for those who aspire to work with strategy, systems design, and cross-disciplinary innovation.
