MSc (MTM) student - Phang Fu Chun

As an Industrial and Systems Engineering alumnus (Class of 2019) with nearly five years of experience spearheading digital transformation at a leading multi-purpose port operator in Singapore, Fu Chun was drawn back to pursue the Master of Science in Maritime Technology and Management (MTM) programme for AY2024/25. The programme's joint hosting between the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management (ISEM) and Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS) offered a unique blend of technological expertise and management principles to advance his career.

Fu Chun shares, "What makes this programme stand out is its exceptional industry exposure through guest lectures by Chief Executive Officers from PSA International, CMA CGM Asia Pacific, and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Assistant Chief Executive from Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This is complemented by industrial visits to PSA Singapore, Singapore Maritime Gallery, and MPA's Port Operations Control Centre. Combined with the comprehensive curriculum emphasising maritime fundamentals, port logistics, data analytics, and applied programming, the programme's rigorous environment challenged me to excel, earning the MSc (MTM) Commendation List (top 10% of cohort) for both semesters and graduating as the top student of the MTM cohort (Class of 2025).

This solid foundation equipped me with practical skills that proved invaluable during my data engineering internship at MPA and now drive my success as a Product Manager at Singapore Maritime Institute. Beyond academics, the programme provided me with meaningful opportunities to serve the student community as MTM Student Council President and ISEM Graduate Club Advisor, leading teams in organising cohesion and welfare events throughout the academic year to enhance the student experience at NUS.

Looking ahead, I aspire to grow into a thought leadership position where I can drive innovation at the intersection of maritime technology and data science, becoming a key contributor to maritime digitalisation. The combination of rigorous academics, exceptional industry exposure, and diverse leadership roles have positioned me well to make meaningful impact at the forefront of the industry's transformation."
