Industrial Attachment Program (IAP)
Duration: 6-month (Jan - Jun or Jul - Dec each year).
It is our hope that students will receive a meaningful engineering experience by the end of the industrial attachment. For the attachment to be effective, it is important that besides honing engineering technical skills, students should also be exposed to some, if not all, of the following:
- Human Relations – working with professionals in a corporate environment
- Computer Applications – using technology as an aid in planning, designing and analysis of engineering projects
- Cost Implications – awareness of cost effectiveness in engineering proposals/designs
- Safety Measures – awareness of importance of industrial safety
- Quality Control – awareness of quality in the work performed
- Productivity – awareness of measures taken to improve the productivity at the workplace
- Marketing – awareness of methods of product promotion

Vacation Internship Program (VIP)

Duration: 3-month (May - Jul each year).
This program is similar to IAP except that the duration is shorter and students approach companies individually. If companies are interested to participate, please send a short description to isebox1@nus.edu.sg for placement on the student website. The students, mostly 2nd (after 4 semesters of studies) or 3rd year students (after 6 semesters of studies). will apply directly to the company.
If you have further queries or require more information, please send an email to isebox1@nus.edu.sg and provide us with your contact details.
System Design Project (SDP)

Duration: 9 months (usually starts in Aug each year).
The objective of the design project is to provide an opportunity for students to gain practical design experience in an actual industry setting. Such experience will also provide the students with a broader scope of industrial engineering by applying a range of IE-related concepts rather than concentrating on one particular subject area.
The module provides the students opportunity to
- Study, formulate and analyze an actual industrial problem with the goal of recommending a design solution that is practical.
- Apply knowledge learnt in the classroom to an actual problem assigned.
- Acquire intangible attributes such as working in a team and practical experience that cannot be taught in a classroom environment.
- Practise and improve the skills of technical report writing and oral presentation.
Companies' participation and support for this module are therefore important for these values to be imparted to the students effectively. The Systems Design Project module is carried out over a period of two semesters. It is offered at the beginning of every academic year which starts in early August and the work will span approximately nine months. The nature of the work is on resolving a specific problem or completing a specific project and is not intended for carrying out day-to-day operations.
During the course of the project, students are not allowed to receive compensation for work done. However, companies are encouraged to provide typical office facilities such as photocopying, printing, and in some cases, supplies and travel expenses to the students.
If you have further queries or require more information, please send an email to isebox1@nus.edu.sg and provide us with your contact details.
Final Year Project (FYP)

Duration: 9 months (usually starts in Aug each year).
The objective of this project is to give students exposure to research. Each student is assigned to a research project that requires application of industrial and systems engineering concepts. The project is done by the student individually. The student will be taking courses during the 9 months period so it is not a full time work attachment. An actual industrial problem with potential research scope can be proposed. This project proposal is usually work out between the company and the interested faculty. Unlike the systems design project, results of the study may not necessarily be subjected to non-disclosure. It depends on the agreement between the NUS faculty member and the company concerned. Essentially, the thesis report is made publicly available. However, data from the company can be kept confidential. If the company has any specific project in mind, please write a short description and send it to isebox1@nus.edu.sg. We will try to match the company's proposal with staff member whom might be interested.
