A/Prof Chia Eng Seng, Aaron’s ‘Are Electric Vehicles Always Better for the Environment?’ Ranked Top 10% Most-Viewed Papers Published by INCOSE International Symposium

Associate Professor Chia Eng Seng, Aaron’s work, Are Electric Vehicles Always Better for the Environment?, published in INCOSE International Symposium on behalf of International Council On Systems Engineering, has ranked within the top 10% of most-viewed papers published by the journal in 2024.

We are delighted to announce that Associate Professor Chia Eng Seng, Aaron’s work, Are Electric Vehicles Always Better for the Environment?, published in INCOSE International Symposium on behalf of International Council On Systems Engineering, has ranked within the top 10% of most-viewed papers published by the journal in 2024!

The paper studies electric vehicles, which have been touted for their environmental friendliness, as their carbon emissions are significantly reduced during the usage phase compared to traditional petrol vehicles. However, from a lifecycle assessment perspective, it is necessary to examine how the components of electric vehicles are obtained, constructed, operated, maintained, and disposed to better inform of their impact on the environment. The carbon emissions for electric cars were higher during the manufacturing phase but lower in the longer term. However, electric cars scored higher in terms of marine aquatic toxicity and the disposal of batteries is increasing becoming a challenge. Hence, from a sustainability perspective, the lifespan of electric cars should be extended.

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is a global, not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to the discipline of Systems Engineering (SE). INCOSE is designed to connect professionals with educational, networking, and career-advancement opportunities in the interest of developing the global community of systems engineers and systems approaches to problems. The council’s membership produces state-of-the-art products that support and enhance the discipline’s visibility in the world.

This achievement truly highlights the impact of A/Prof Chia and his team within the community. We are looking forward to more of his contributions in the field!
