Professor Philip Liu, Vice President (Research and Technology) and Distinguished Professor from NUS Civil & Environmental Engineering, received an Honorary Professorship at Tsinghua University in China on 14 October 2018.
Pro Liu's research focuses on Coastal Oceanography and Engineering. He is known for his outstanding achievements and contributions to tsunami and coastal disaster resilience technology.
Prof Liu also established the COMCOT (Cornell-Multi-grid-Coupled-Tsunami-Model) and COBRAS (Cornell-Breaking-Waves-and Structures) based on nonlinear shallow water wave theory and the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations respectively. He presented a talk titled 'A Tale of Two Typhoons in Macau', which analysed the similarities and dissimilarities of both Typhoon Hato (2017) and Typhoon Mangkhut (2018) with respect to typhoon characteristics and resulting flooding patterns in Macau.
