Biomedical Engineering

Learning about the Health and Biomedical Sector through Design

The health and biomedical sector is a fast-growing field with many career opportunities. It’s expanding due to advancements in technology, like AI and biotechnology, that are transforming how we diagnose and treat diseases. With more people living longer and the rise in chronic illnesses, there’s an increasing demand for healthcare services. Public health challenges, such as pandemics, also highlight the importance of this sector. Careers in health and biomedicine allow you to make a real impact whether you’re interested in patient care, research, engineering, or technology.

This workshop will help participants recognise opportunities in the health and biomedical sector, in order to make more informed decisions on joining the sector.

Chemical Engineering

Fun with Fluid Flow

Have you ever wondered how complex flow systems are controlled and monitored in real-world applications? What are the instruments used to manage and measure these flows? How do the settings of valves and other components affect the overall process?

This is a key aspect of understanding fluid dynamics in engineering. At this workshop, you will get a hands-on introduction to the Fluid Dynamic Pilot Plant. A facilitator will provide a brief overview of the instruments and their operation, along with a schematic of the plant.

Prior to the event, an information booklet will familiarize you with the various flowmeters, valves, and fittings, so you'll be well-prepared. You'll then explore different flow configurations by adjusting the valves, reinforcing your understanding of the booklet’s content, and tackling guiding questions about the setup.

5G Digital Technology for buildings

Participants will explore the exciting realm of 5G-enabled digital building technologies, focusing on innovative systems and robotics that enhance building maintenance for improved efficiency and sustainability. Through hands-on activities, learners will gain a solid understanding of key concepts such as 5G connectivity, digital twins, robotics, AI, video analytics, AR, and VR, and discover how these technologies can transform smart facilities management.

The workshop will include engaging presentations on 5G-enabled digital building technologies, along with case studies showcasing real-world applications. Attendees will also have the opportunity to work with various robotics, including AGVs, UAVs, cleaning robots, disinfecting robots, inspection robots, surveillance robots, and drones.

Additionally, students will have the chance to go on a tour of the Net Zero Building SDE4, where they can see sustainable engineering in action!

Wearable Technology Workshop

Participants will be introduced to the fascinating field of wearable technology, exploring its various applications in electronic and energy devices. They will discover the typical types of wearable devices and understand the significance of materials in their development.

This workshop will cover the allure of wearable technology and delve into what constitutes wearable electronics. Learners will gain insights into the applications of these devices and the critical role materials play in their design.

Additionally, attendees will enjoy hands-on experience by creating their own biomechanical energy harvester, bringing the concepts to life through practical experimentation.

Mechanical Engineering

Motor Dissection

Join us to explore the fascinating world of motors, where engineering meets physics in transforming electrical energy into mechanical energy. In this hands-on workshop, participants will disassemble a geared DC motor to understand its inner workings while reviewing essential electrical and mechanical principles.

Visual Communication Workshop

Join us for an engaging Visual Communication workshop where participants will explore the fundamental concepts of design, including visual hierarchy, Gestalt theory, color semantics and balance, typography, and an introduction to branding. Through these principles, attendees will discover how to apply these concepts to various companies, public spaces, and educational environments.

The workshop features hands-on activities using digital design tools, allowing participants to create their own logomarks and logotypes while personalizing projects through image editing.

Landscape Architecture

Sustainable Landscape Design Workshop
