A team of Biomedical Engineering students from the National University of Singapore has developed an adaptive tableware for the visually impaired. They were inspired to create this prototype after they visited an Eldercare during a BME module, Gerontechnology for ageing. A visually disabled elderly was having a lot of difficulty eating, and the students knew that they could come up with a tableware which would help him eat better. Utilising computer modelling and 3D printing, they were able to fabricate a prototype, which had positive feedback from both the visually impaired individual and the Eldercare. The team of students then decided to refine the idea further, making the tableware food safe. They participated in the NUS Resilience and Growth Innovation Challenge and obtained funding to fabricate the tableware into a food safe material. With the funding, the team also intends to increase manufacturing and help as many visually impaired individuals that they can. The BME Department would like to wish them good luck and will continue to support them in their endeavors!
