Professor David Weitz from Harvard University was appointed as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering on 16 April 2019. Professor Weitz is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics and Applied Physic at Harvard University, where he has joint appointment at both the Physics Department and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He leads the experimental soft condensed matter physics research group. His research work is in the field of soft condensed matter and microfluidic devices for biomedical applications.

Professor Weitz is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, American Chemical Society and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Chemistry. He has been recognized through numerous awards including but not limited to the Exxon Incentive Awards, the Chevreul Medal and the Distinguished Alumnus Award (University of Waterloo).
