Recent research by Prof. Zhang Yong was published in Nature Communications and has been highlighted in Nature. They designed upconversion nanoparticles, which allows for the precise navigation of energy transfer pathways within single lanthanide ions to enable photoswitchable emissions. The team then used these particles to control the beating of heart-muscle cells that were modified to respond to each color: red slowed them down, and green sped them up.
