Internships

Internships

Internships are a key facet of our emphasis on learning by doing. Through them, you gain perspectives on real-world issues while working on real-life projects alongside engineering practitioners.

Typically in Year 3, you would embark on a compulsory* industrial attachment (IA) of at least 20 weeks# (with optional extension to 24 weeks for extra 2 Units). During your IA, you would be able to read up to 2 technical electives in the evenings to fulfil your major requirements , or other evening modules to count as unrestricted elective modules (UEMs).

Internship positions will be offered for your selection through an online internship portal. You may also source for your own internship opportunities with companies that are not in the portal.

Cohorts AY2020/2021 and EarlierStudents can only do ONE credit bearing internship, either the Industrial Attachment (IA) or Vacation Industrial Attachment (VIA) depending on their programme/cohort requirements.

Cohorts AY2021/2022 and AfterStudents may take up to 20 units of credit-bearing internships from the following list of courses:Vacation Internship Programme (VIP)Vacation Industrial Attachment (VIA)Industrial Attachment (IA)Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)Start-up Internship Programme/Innovation & Enterprise InternshipPlease refer here for more information.

* IA is optional if you are a polytechnic graduate admitted directly to Year 2. IA is also optional if you are in a special programme (i.e. double-degree, concurrent degree) – the Units for IA can be utilised as UEMs

 #  If you are pursuing the second major in Innovation and Design (iDP), a 12-week vacation internship programme (VIP) applies instead of the 20-week IA. If you matriculated in AY2017/2018 or earlier, your compulsory IA would be 24 weeks in length.
