Head’s Message

Welcome to the New Academic Year!

A very warm welcome to all returning students, faculty and staff, and a special welcome to the new students joining our community for the very first time.

We are entering an incredibly exciting year. As Singapore rolls out major public infrastructure projects and a national $115 million programme (Cities of Tomorrow R&D Programme) to optimise land use and advance nature-based solutions, civil and environmental engineers are at the forefront of this transformation. From deploying cutting-edge digital twins and automating construction to pioneering circular waste management, boosting climate resilience, and introducing smart, sustainable materials, your work will directly shape the future of the built environment.

Our flexible undergraduate curriculum is designed precisely for this evolving landscape. It allows you to custom-build a unique set of skills tailored to your passions while mastering the core foundations of your discipline. Complex global problems require integrated thinking. One of our department's greatest strengths is bringing together highly skilled faculty and researchers across civil, environmental, and sustainability engineering—all collaborating under one roof.

As we kick off the new semester, here is a snapshot of the department activities you can look forward to:

  • Fireside Chats: Connect directly with accomplished alumni and fellow students.
  • Distinguished Lectures & Exhibitions: Attend eminent Chair Professorship lectures and engage with industry.
  • Alumni Events: Networking dinners with alumni cohorts.  
  • Student Club Activities: Participate in vibrant campus life, overseas community projects, field trips and other peer-led events.

Finally, I am thrilled to share that our CEE Department has reached new heights in the QS World University Rankings. Civil Engineering is now ranked 2nd globally (just after MIT), and Environmental Science is ranked 7th. These extraordinary achievements reflect the rising global academic standing of our department and the immense capability of our students and alumni.
