CDE celebrates community members honoured at 61st National Day Awards

Prof Teo Kie Leong, Prof Lim Chwee Teck, Assoc Prof Chai Kai Hin and Emer Prof Ong Say Leong are among the 24 CDE community members who have been recognised in National Day Awards 2026 for their contributions to Singapore.

CDE celebrates 24 members of its community who received National Day Awards in recognition of their dedicated leadership and service to the University and Singapore, including Professor Teo Kie Leong, Professor Lim Chwee Teck, Associate Professor Chai Kai Hin and Emeritus Professor Ong Say Leong.

Our congratulations to the following CDE faculty members who have received awards at this year's NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Awards (ATEA), organised by the NUS Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT).

▌ Centre of Excellence in Modelling and Simulation for Next Generation Ports (C4NGP)

Dr Li Haobin featured in MPA’s '30 Years. 30 Changemakers'

Li Haobin MPA

Dr Li Haobin has been featured by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in its “30 Years. 30 Changemakers” series, which spotlights individuals who have contributed to shaping Singapore’s maritime landscape.

In the feature, “Where Research Meets Reality: Building Singapore’s Maritime Knowledge Engine”, Dr Li shares how research at C4NGP bridges advanced modelling and simulation with real-world maritime challenges. His work includes using simulation to evaluate and validate next-generation port concepts, with studies contributing insights to the planning and design of Tuas Port and supporting the development of more efficient and intelligent port operations.

The feature also highlights C4NGP’s role in bringing research, industry and education together. As a research centre hosted by the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management (ISEM), C4NGP draws on the Department’s expertise in modelling, simulation and decision-making to address complex maritime systems and operational challenges. This includes translating research knowledge into talent development through the MSc in Maritime Technology and Management programme.

Through these efforts, C4NGP and ISEM continue to support Singapore’s development towards more intelligent, resilient and future-ready maritime systems.

▌ Biomedical Engineering

Prof Lim Chwee Teck receives Eric Reissner Medal Award and WACBE Savio L-Y. Woo Distinguished Lecture Award

Professor Lim Chwee Teck received the Eric Reissner Medal at the 32nd International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Science (ICCES 2026), as well as the WACBE Savio L-Y. Woo Distinguished Lecture Award at the 12th WACBE Congress on Bioengineering 2026.

The Eric Reissner Medal recognises researchers from around the world for outstanding contributions to engineering and computational science. This prestigious award recognises Prof Lim’s contributions to mechanics, mechanobiology, and engineering science, and his continued efforts to advance the understanding of how mechanical principles can be used to study human diseases as well as address important challenges in healthcare.

The 2026 WACBE Savio L-Y. Woo Distinguished Lecture Award is one of the highest honours from the World Association for Chinese Biomedical Engineers, recognising senior scientists for pioneering contributions, leadership, and lasting impact in biomedical engineering. Prof Lim is the first recipient from Asia since the award was established in 2015.

The recognition reflects his internationally acclaimed contributions to mechanobiology, microfluidics, wearable biomedical technologies, and translational health innovation, as well as his longstanding commitment to mentorship and scientific leadership.

Asst Prof Hou Yi receives Young Scientist Award

Assistant Professor Hou Yi has been presented with the Young Scientist Award at the annual President’s Science & Technology Awards (PSTA), Singapore’s highest honours for scientists and engineers.

Asst Prof Hou was honoured in recognition of his pioneering work in the development of next-generation solar cell technology, in particular for his contributions to the development of high-performance perovskite solar technologies, from record-breaking devices to scalable manufacturing.

Organised and presented annually by the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Young Scientist Award is awarded to researchers aged 40 or under who are actively engaged in R&D in Singapore and who have shown great potential to be world-class researchers in their fields of expertise.

Asst Prof Hou was presented with the award by NRF Chairman Mr Heng Swee Keat at a ceremony on 28 August 2026 held at Nanyang Technological University.

▌ Civil and Environmental Engineering

Asst Prof Iris Yu appointed to ASEAN Biotechnology and Food Science role

Iris Yu

Assistant Professor Iris Yu has been appointed as Singapore’s Secondary Focal Point for Biotechnology and Food Science (SC-BFS), ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI).

Her appointment will take effect from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029, recognising her ongoing leadership and expertise in biotechnology and sustainable food systems.

Best Poster Award at 15th APTE Conference

The paper/poster entitled "Vision-based intelligent assessment of transport infrastructure and streetscape through probe bicycle” by Graduate Tutor and PhD student Wisely Jun Heng Ong and Associate Professor Raymond Ong won the Best Poster Award at the 15th Asia-Pacific Conference on Transportation and the Environment (APTE).

The conference was held on 8-9 July 2026 in Jeju, Korea. 

The award is given to the top five posters out of the 155 posters (top 3.5%) presented at the conference.  

▌ Electrical and Computer Engineering

Prof Cheng-Wei Qiu honoured with PIER award and Member European Academy of Sciences

Professor Cheng-Wei Qiu has been presented with the Inaugural PIER Achievement Award, by The Electromagnetics Academy US and has been appointed a Non-European Member of European Academy of Sciences.

The PIER Achievement Award was presented to Prof Qiu in recognition of his “significant achievements in advancing academic excellence and photonics and electromagnetics research.”

The European Academy of Sciences is an independent international body that brings together distinguished scholars and draws on their expertise to strengthen scientific cooperation and advise institutions on research, technology and social development.

Prof Qiu’s work has achieved worldwide recognition for advancing the understanding of multiscale symmetry, topology and geometry in natural crystals and meta-optics. His pioneering research and leadership in optical metasurfaces and photonics have earned him several honours.

Research Led by Prof Ang Kah Wee Recognised as Nanoscale Horizons 2025 Outstanding Review

A research review led by Professor Ang Kah Wee has been recognised as a Nanoscale Horizons 2025 Outstanding Review winner. 

Titled “Emerging 2D materials hardware for in-sensor computing,” the review, authored by Yufei Shi, Ngoc Thanh Duong, and Prof Ang, provides a forward-looking perspective on how emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials can enable a new generation of intelligent sensing hardware. The work explores in-sensor computing, an emerging approach that integrates sensing, memory and computation directly within sensory devices. By processing information closer to where it is acquired, such systems could reduce data-transfer requirements, latency and energy consumption, paving the way for more efficient edge-AI technologies. 

Led by Prof Ang, the research team examines how the unique properties of 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures can enable biomimetic sensory and synaptic functionalities. These include mechanisms such as photovoltaic effects, ferroelectricity, conductive filaments, and charge trapping and detrapping dynamics. 

The review further highlights emerging applications in retinomorphic vision, reservoir computing, motion detection, LiDAR-inspired processing and multimodal sensory fusion. Together, these developments point towards compact, adaptive and energy-efficient intelligent sensing systems for applications ranging from IoT devices to future edge-AI technologies. The work brings together interdisciplinary expertise across 2D materials, neuromorphic devices, optoelectronic sensing and edge computing, providing a comprehensive perspective on how advances in materials and device engineering can contribute to next-generation intelligent sensory hardware. 

The Nanoscale Horizons Outstanding Review recognition highlights the review’s contribution in consolidating developments across these rapidly evolving fields and identifying promising directions for future research. 

Prof Akshay Rathore receives IAS Distinguished Service Award

Professor Akshay Kumar Rathore has received the 2026 IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Distinguished Service Award, recognising his leadership in establishing new IAS activities and expanding its programmes. An IEEE Fellow, Prof Rathore served on the IAS Executive Board in several roles from 2017 to 2025. He currently serves on the IAS Council as Web Tutorial Chair, Andrew W. Smith Outstanding Young Member Achievement Award Committee Chair, Distinguished Lecturer Program Vice-Chair, and R10 Southeast Asia, Australia and Pacific Area Chair.

Prof Rathore’s research focuses on power electronics and the control of electric motor drives, including advances in technologies that convert and control electrical power more efficiently, particularly for renewable integration, transportation electrification and industrial drive applications. He has published around 300 research papers, including 110 in IEEE Transactions journals, and has delivered more than 300 invited talks globally.

One of the largest specialist societies within IEEE, the IAS connects more than 20,000 members through over 530 chapters worldwide. It focuses on electrical and electronic engineering for industry and commerce, linking research to practice and bridging the gap between academia and industry. Prof Rathore is the first recipient from the Asia-Pacific region to receive the Distinguished Service Award since it was established in 1988.

ECE team wins best paper award at IEEE EMBC 2026

IEEE EMBS Best Paper Award

A research team comprising Teaching Assistant and PhD student Mr Shao Yurui, Associate Professor Arthur Tay, Associate Professor Heng Chun Huat, and Dr Yen Shih-Cheng has received the Best Paper Award at the 2026 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (EMBC 2026) for their paper, “Learning Temporal Dependencies of Gait Cycles for Freezing of Gait Prediction.” 

The research was conducted in collaboration with clinicians and researchers from the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) and Singapore General Hospital (SGH). The Best Paper Award at IEEE EMBC 2026 recognises the quality and significance of the team’s research contribution among the papers presented at the conference. The achievement highlights ECE’s commitment to interdisciplinary research that applies engineering expertise to meaningful challenges in healthcare, with the potential to translate research innovations into technologies that improve patient outcomes and quality of life. 

▌ Materials Science and Engineering

Prof Sir Konstantin Novoselov elected Fellow of Singapore National Academy of Science

Prof Novoselov holds a Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorship at NUS, and is also Director of the Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials.

Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov has been elected a Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS), the highest scientific recognition conferred by a science society in Singapore.

The SNAS Fellowship honours individuals who have made exceptional and enduring contributions to science and education. Fellows are also called upon to help guide national research directions, provide scientific thought leadership and strengthen public understanding of science.

Prof Novoselov, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics, holds the Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorship and is Director of the NUS Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials (I-FIM). His research spans condensed matter physics, nanotechnology and two-dimensional materials.

A Fellow of The Royal Society and author of more than 600 peer-reviewed publications, Prof Novoselov has received numerous international honours for his contributions to science.
