AkiLA 2026 sparks freshmen bonding

AkiLA ’26 kickstarted the incoming freshmen’s journey at NUS Architecture and Landscape Architecture! 

Organised by The Architecture Society, our freshmen stepped into a world inspired by characters and settings from Zootopia by The Walt Disney Company with their fellow district mates in character-inspired divisions. Together, they took on exciting challenges that helped build trust and camaraderie. 

From water games to crafting Zootopia characters, every activity encouraged teamwork and creativity. They also took on the challenge of building structures using cardboard, giving them an early glimpse of what studying Architecture and Landscape Architecture is all about – working as a team and thinking creatively. 

After three days of challenges, freshmen left AkiLA ’26 with unforgettable memories and new friends that they can rely on throughout their time at NUS.

Calibur Robotics holds Sponsorship Appreciation Dinner

Calibur Robotics Sponsorship Appreciation Dinner

This season has been a strong one for Calibur Robotics. At RoboMaster University League (RMUL) 2026, the team clinched 2nd place in the Engineer Challenge, continuing its strong run since the new competition format’s debut in 2025.  

To celebrate these achievements and to thank their sponsors and partners, the team hosted its annual Sponsorship Appreciation Dinner at the Innovation & Design Hub. A demonstration of five robots — Hopps, Engineer, Hero, Turtle and the autonomous Sentry — alongside workshop tours by the team’s project managers gave sponsors a closer look at what their support helps make possible.  

The team also shared its plans for the season ahead, including RMUL 2027 in China and potentially the ARC Championship in North America, which would mark its first competition outside the RoboMaster series. Looking ahead, Calibur is prioritising the integration of machine learning into its robots’ navigation stack, while continuing to strengthen its in-house engineering capabilities via the DarkNUS training programme.

Every chassis, every board, every case that arrived in one piece exists because someone decided to back a group of students who wanted to build something hard. Gordon Yong and Goh Tok Xiang receive Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers (SISV) Gold Medals

Mr Gordon Yong Yong, Master of Science in Project Management '26, and Mr Goh Tok Xiang, Bachelor of Science in Project and Facilities Management '26, were awarded the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers (SISV) Gold Medal in recognition of their outstanding achievement.

The SISV Gold medal is an academic award recognising top-performing students in surveying and related fields of the built environment in Singapore, serving as a marker of excellence for future professionals in the land surveying, quantity surveying, and valuation sectors.

The medals were presented at the SISV Annual Dinner 2026 by Guest of Honour Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Finance, and Second Minister for National Development, together with Sr Colin Kin, President of the SISV.

Freshmen dive into CAMP NORRI

Chemical Engineering Freshmen Orientation 1

Three days, plenty of games, and making new friends – CAMP NORRI got Chemical Engineering freshmen off to a fun start! 

Organised by the NUS Chemical Engineering Students Society, this year’s freshmen orientation programme (FOP) was planned around a food and cooking theme. The camp had freshmen getting creative with their flag paintings while taking on games and activities to help them settle into their university life. 

Freshmen got a head start on life in Chemical Engineering through sessions on course registration and curriculum planning, before they took on station games around the Engineering building. 

One of the biggest highlights was beach day, where freshmen spent the day by the sea. From volleyball to Cham Cham Cham, it was a chance for everyone to have fun, get to know their orientation groups, and make memories together. 

The different orientation groups also came together as one for mass games and an amazing race. With stops at places like Yusof Ishak House and Utown, freshmen got to explore more of campus while making friends beyond their own orientation groups. The three days wrapped up with a photobooth and a recap video, capturing memorable moments from the camp. 

Reflecting on the FOP, project director Tammy Nguyen (Year 2, Chemical Engineering) shared, “Seeing the freshmen enjoying and having fun during the three days definitely made the months of planning pay off.”

ChBE welcomes incoming postgraduate students

From recognising the contributions of graduate students to getting a taste of life in Singapore, the incoming Chemical Engineering postgraduate students got to know more about the department and the opportunities beyond their research. 

The welcome event began with Associate Professor Yang Kun-Lin, Deputy Head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE), presenting the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards, recognising graduate students for their dedication as teaching assistants. 

Students also heard from Wang Yuheng, a PhD student from ChBE and a member of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Graduate Student Association on how it supports graduate students. Through academic seminars and talks, PhD Qualifying Examination support, cultural exchange and festival celebrations, and outdoor activities and volunteer programmes, students learnt about the opportunities to connect with their peers and get involved in activities outside their research. 

To help students settle into life in ChBE and Singapore, Assoc Prof Yang shared an overview of ChBE and introduced them to Singapore’s multicultural society and food culture, from chicken rice and laksa to durian. He encouraged them to explore their surroundings and connect with people from different backgrounds, sharing: “Singapore is home to people of many different races, religions, languages, and traditions. What makes Singapore truly special is not just its diversity, but the harmony with which we live together. Keep an open mind and take the opportunity to make new friends from different countries.”

Chin Xin Yi receives first prize in inaugural ASCE Singapore best FYP award

Chin Xin Yi won first prize in the inaugural American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE, Singapore Section) Best FYP Award 2026.

Her Final Year Project, supervised by Associate Professor Raymond Ong, was selected as the winning project at the award presentation held at NTU on 7 August 2026. Xin Yi received a certificate and a S$500 cash prize sponsored by Hwa Seng Builder Pte Ltd.

The inaugural award brought together representatives from NUS, NTU, SIT, industry, and the ASCE Singapore Section to recognise outstanding Final Year Projects and celebrate the next generation of civil and environmental engineering talent.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

A mystery-filled start for ECE freshmen

ECHELON, organised by the NUS Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Club, brought freshmen into the mysterious world of ECE Town and five mega-corporations, where they took on the roles of employees to search for their missing CEOs and uncovering the truth behind “Company X”, all while getting to know their coursemates and the ECE community. 

Freshmen got a glimpse of what lies ahead with an introduction to the ECE curriculum, before getting to know one another through icebreakers and team activities. 

From acting out clues in Charades to making their way through a Disco Maze, they had to work together and cheer each other on. The fun continued with a quiz before the day ended with an escape room, where they worked together to crack clues and solve their way through the mystery. 

The camp wrapped up with freshmen taking on water activities like water balloon dodgeball and Red Light Green Light, alongside dance performances from each group, giving everyone a chance to have fun. 

Looking back on the camp, project director Zhang Sicheng (Year 2, Electrical Engineering) shared, “It was a really fulfilling experience to see that the freshmen enjoyed themselves and made new friends from the camp.” 

NUS IEEE-HKN conducts SMD reflow and PCB design workshops

The NUS IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Chapter conducted two workshops for the CDE community as part of the Innovation and Design Programme’s Week 0 Hands-on Workshops.

During the SMD Reflow Workshop led by Teng Yi (Year 4, Computer Engineering), participants were introduced to the SMD reflow process used in PCB fabrication. They gained hands-on experience in applying solder paste, placing SMD components and using hotplates to solder the components securely in place.

In the PCB Design with Altium Workshop, Kenneth Wong (Year 3, Computer Engineering) led participants in designing a simple LED board from learning best practices in schematic design to trace routing and fabrication.

PhD Student Liu Shuai Wins First Prize at IEEE APCAP 2026 Student Paper Contest

PhD student Mr Liu Shuai received First Prize in the Student Paper Contest at the 14th IEEE Asia-Pacific Conference on Antennas and Propagation (IEEE APCAP 2026). His work was co-authored with Professor Chen Zhi Ning and Dr Zhang Bo.

IEEE APCAP is a leading international forum for advances in antennas, electromagnetics and radio-wave propagation. Winning the First Prize in the Student Paper Award recognises Mr Liu Shuai’s innovative contribution to the field.

NUS FSAE marks season end with gratitude

Not every race ends as expected, but every season leaves behind lessons that shape the next.

After the recent season, NUS FSAE hosted its Annual Sponsor Appreciation Event to recognise the industry partners whose support has been pivotal in its journey, including DHL Express Singapore, Altium, Siemens, Batemo GmbH, Tian Ching Long, Wurth Electronics Singapore, Polymer Technologies Pte Ltd, Admiralty International Pte. The event followed a challenging moment at the 2026 FSAE Michigan competition, where R26e was unable to pass the rain test, preventing the team from competing in the dynamic events. Despite the team’s strong track record in tech inspections and adherence to standard operating procedures, a series of unfortunate events left the car vulnerable to water ingress, compounded by the increased water pressure of this year’s test rig. The team has since conducted a thorough post-season review to identify issues and drive improvements.

Looking ahead, NUS FSAE is returning to the fundamentals: rethinking waterproofing, fast-tracking development, and prioritising validation to build a more reliable car with greater test mileage for the season ahead.

R26e Team Lead Xu Zhen (Mechanical Engineering, Class of 2026) expressed heartfelt gratitude to the team’s supporters, noting that despite the results, he remains proud of what the team achieved with the help of its sponsors and NUS.

He shared, “Success in racing is never a given, and this year is a reminder that even the most well-established protocols can be challenged by unforeseen circumstances. I hope that the team will not allow this season’s events to extinguish their passion but instead use them to fuel future endeavours.

iDP student James Wang turns plastic waste into possibility

What started as discarded plastic boxes in NUS labs grew into a project with wider sustainability promise. Class of 2026 Mechanical Engineering and Innovation & Design Programme (iDP) graduate James Wang shows how innovation can give waste new possibilities.  

As team lead of Plastics to Possibilities, James worked alongside fellow iDP students Jay-En Chong (Electrical Engineering, Class of 2026), Yi Chee Huang (Computer Science, Class of 2026) and Tse Han Low (Year 4, Electrical Engineering) to explore how routinely discarded polypropylene plastic boxes from NUS labs could be transformed into 3D printing filament.  

The project was driven by his belief that recycling is “a game of supply and demand” where value must first be created in the material itself. In this case, 3D printing supports everyday users and industrial practitioners. The team aimed to develop high-quality 3D printing filaments with a circular and even cross-section that could make polypropylene recycling more commercially viable. 

However, getting there required extensive research and experimentation on polypropylene’s response to different temperatures, cooling speeds and pulling rates during filament formation. A turning point came when project supervisor Dr Jovan Tan advised the team not to seek to control all parameters that affected quality, but rather to identify and focus on the few factors with the greatest impact. This led the team to reassess and concentrate their efforts where they would matter most. 

With this project, James was selected for the Youth for Environmental Sustainability (YES) Leaders Programme supported by the National Environment Agency (NEA). Mentorship from sustainability leaders and project funding enabled James to further develop a prototype, with hopes of scaling it into a practical circular solution for plastic waste. In the nearer future, he aims to support a closed-loop system within NUS, where campus-generated plastic waste is converted back into 3D printing filament for student use. 

James shared that his innovation journey through iDP and as a YES Leader taught him to dig deep into problems and create value that people want, adding that sustainability work is not just about identifying environmental challenges, but about becoming active problem solvers who can bring value to these issues. 

Now working in the Sustainability Strategy Unit under NUS’ University Campus Infrastructure, James continues to build on these skills and perspectives, from analysing complex systems to learning from industry experts.  

He shows how initiative, persistence and purpose can turn ideas into real-world outcomes. As James put it, “No matter how small an action may be, take that first step and the rest will follow.” 

Industrial Design

PhD candidate Siew E Ian's innovation goes national

This National Day, one story of innovation reminds us how personal experience can shape something that serves others. 

Under the theme "Majulah Singapore, Go Beyond!", this year’s National Day celebrates individuals who have gone above and beyond for the wider communityrecognising their contributions across six categories: Build, Care, Create, Justice, Protect, Provide.  

Department of Design PhD candidate E Ian Siew was recognised under the Create category for his award winning innovation Auxobrace, a rehabilitative device for open-heart surgery patients that incorporates a mini vacuum pump to create targeted pressure around the chest. The internal structure comprises mini cubes with precise gaps that close as air is evacuated, allowing the vest to shrink and contract uniformly. The device is now being trialled on healthy volunteers, with testing on NUH patients expected soon.  

After two open-heart surgeries, Ian knew firsthand how challenging recovery could be, especially with conventionally bulky sternal braces.  

Seeing a project born from his own recovery journey featured on the national stage was a full-circle moment for Ian. 

As his float moved around the stadium during The People’s Parade, the emcee introduced his name and contribution while he waved to the audience and soaked in the atmosphere. 

For the younger students and aspiring innovators in the crowds, Ian shared, “I hope they can see how personal experiences can be powerful sources of inspiration. Even things that may not seem immediately useful can still hold real value and help us go beyond what we imagine, shaping meaningful innovation for others.”

MDes cohort embark on design journey

MDes Orientation 1

The third cohort of students in the Master of Design in Integrated Design (MDes) programme embarked on their journey with a week of orientation activities designed to build connections and foster the collaborative spirit at the heart of the programme.  

The week opened with a welcome session introducing students to the programme’s core coursesfaculty members, and research opportunities across different labs.  

Students then took part in a two-day Design Sprint facilitated by colleagues from the NUS Agility Office, where they worked in teams to tackle a real-world challenge: designing a self-sustaining system that supports comfortable movement across campus, rain or shine. After conducting interviews, gathering insights, and carrying out live usability testing, the teams presented their ideas to Associate Professor Donn Koh and the Agility Team. 

MDes student Aditi Malik observed that campus navigation can be especially difficult for new students on rainy days, who may be unaware of the sheltered pathways. This insight led her team to shift from an umbrella-finding concept to a three-dimensional wayfinding solution that shows how different building levels connect, helping users discover sheltered routes across campus. 

The week concluded with a team-building workshop led by leadership coach Andre Rubin, who shared practical insights on team dynamics, collaboration, and conflict resolution in multidisciplinary settings.  

Speaking about what he looked forward to most in the programme, MDes student Ong Kong Jin said, “The department’s various industry partners provide opportunities to ideate and tackle problems in a plethora of local contexts, which is really exciting.” 

Aditi added, “I’m excited to see that the programme encourages us to develop skills across different areas, giving designers the flexibility to explore different approaches to solving a problem.”

Industrial Systems Engineering & Management

ISE freshmen begin their CDE journey

A closer look at the curriculum, career opportunities, and student life – that’s how the newest Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) cohort kicked off their time at CDE! 

Opening the session, Professor Ye Zhisheng, Deputy Head (Undergraduate Programmes), welcomed freshmen with an introduction to the curriculum and what they can expect from the programme. 

Freshmen also picked up practical tips during the Centre for Future-ready Graduates (CFG) @nuscfg sharing on making the most of their university years, from exploring internships and career pathways to building meaningful professional connections. 

Moving beyond academics, ISE Club Vice President (External) and Year 2 student Riley Kang shared how the student club helps freshmen find their community. Whether it’s lifting spirits with exam welfare packs, bringing students together through bonding events, giving back through community involvement projects, learning from alumni, or taking on real-world challenges at the annual Business Analytics Case Competition, freshmen saw how the club creates opportunities to connect, give back, and grow. 

“We wanted freshmen to understand the different ways they could meet new people and even contribute behind-the-scenes as part of the main committee,” Riley shared.

ISEM Graduate Club leads students on campus scavenger hunt and company visit

More than just finding their way around CDE, incoming Industrial Systems Engineering & Management (ISEM) graduate students had a chance to find new friends at a Campus Scavenger Hunt organised by the NUS ISEM Graduate Club. The orientation also included course introductions by professors, giving students a clearer sense of what to expect in the semester ahead before they set off in teams of five to six to explore campus together.

Guided with photo clues, the students made their way across different locations of NUS, discovering key campus landmarks, completing challenges, and submitting their findings through a Telegram group chat. The scavenger hunt helped students get familiar with their new surroundings in a fun and interactive way, while getting to know their new coursemates along the way.

Reflecting on the goal of the scavenger hunt, NUS ISEM Graduate Club president and MSc (Supply Chain Management) student Dominik Alexander Bendrien shared, “The mission of the ISEM Graduate Club is to elevate our postgraduates’ experience while at NUS – academically, professionally, and socially. We decided to focus on the social component for the Scavenger Hunt this year to provide a platform for new students to find new friends on day one.” 

The graduate club also collaborated with DHL and Henkel for an industry exchange, connecting ISEM graduate students with innovative supply chain solutions, career insights, and real-world logistics operations. The visit combined a joint company introduction, exposure to the DHL Asia Pacific Innovation Center, and a warehouse tour that brought large-scale supply chain operations to life.

ME freshmen explore what's ahead

From career readiness to student organisations, Freshman Welcome 2026 gave Mechanical Engineering, Robotics and Machine Intelligence, and Engineering Science freshmen a glimpse of the opportunities that await them at CDE! 

The day began with a warm welcome from Professor Lee Poh Seng, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, followed by programme briefings for each cohort. 

Freshmen got to know about how the Centre for Future-ready Graduates (CFG) helps students prepare for their future careers, from exploring internships to building professional networks and navigating different career paths. 

Sharing sessions by student societies and competition teams also offered freshmen a closer look at CDE. Competitive robotics came to life as Suzanne Chia (Year 3, Robotics and Machine Intelligence) from NUS Calibur Robotics introduced freshmen to the DJI RoboMaster University Championship. From the fast-paced Standard robot capable of launching 17mm projectiles, to the autonomous Sentry and resourceful Engineer robots, freshmen saw what competitive robotics is all about – combining engineering, strategy, and teamwork. 

The programme continued with a sharing about the Engineering Scholars programme, as well as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), where Xia Yuman (Year 3, Mechanical Engineering) shared more about the society’s professional development programmes and scholarships that can take them further. 

Reflecting on the sharing, Yuman shared, “I wanted the freshmen to see that ASME NUS Student Section is a welcoming and inclusive community where they can make friends, develop professionally, and make the most of their university journey.” 

With Freshman Welcome behind them, we look forward to seeing our freshmen settle into university life and excel at CDE!

A three-day adventure at CDE Camp

Three days, countless laughs, and friendships in the making! CDE Camp welcomed our incoming freshmen for a memorable three-day adventure packed with icebreakers, mass games, team challenges, an Amazing Race, as well as band and DJ performances. Titled "Unheimlich: Beyond Return", the camp was designed as a survival programme where "instinct, trust, and perception are constantly tested". Freshmen were split into four houses and challenged to work together through a series of activities that pushed them outside their comfort zones and helped them build stronger connections with their orientation groups. 

For the organising committee, putting together a large-scale camp came with its challenges, from keeping activities engaging to managing different levels of confidence and participation. With clear communication, quick adjustments, and support from orientation group leaders, the committee ensured that every freshman felt included and every activity ran smoothly. More than the fun and excitement, the most meaningful takeaway for the committee was witnessing how the freshmen's once-hesitant introductions at the start transformed into warm cheering and laughter by the end of the camp. 

Project Director Ng Kai Lin Audrey (Year 2, Infrastructure and Project Management), shared, “We hope the freshmen will remember that CDE Camp was not only about the games and activities, but also about the friendships and sense of belonging they developed. May they continue supporting one another and making meaningful memories throughout their journey in CDE.” 

CDE RAG team shines at NUS RAG Day 2026

Months of creativity, teamwork, and dedication came together at NUS Rag Day 2026!

Behind every Rag performance are weeks of planning, building, painting, and rehearsing. Since 1958, Rag has brought generations of NUS students together to create vibrant floats and performances, using the showcase to thank the public for their support and celebrate the spirit of giving back.

The CDE team built their storyline around the youths supported by Youth Guidance Outreach Services (YGOS), including youths from disadvantaged backgrounds and young offenders. Their performance followed a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and hope, sharing these experiences with care.

“The biggest challenge we faced was coming up with a storyline that reflected the youths’ experiences authentically – without portraying them in an overly negative or positive light – while making it a performance that everyone could connect with,” shared Jovan Chiu (Year 2, Electrical Engineering), Project Director of CDE Rag.

Using recycled cardboard and discarded wooden planks, the team’s float makers brought the story to life through a handcrafted phoenix, symbolising the rebirth and resilience at the heart of the performance.

Head of Floaters Nathan Khaw (Year 2, Industrial Design) said, “My design background came in handy, especially when applying design and aesthetic principles. Seeing our drawings come to life and everyone’s ideas come together into one has been really rewarding.”

The CDE Rag Team brought home the bronze award! Congratulations to every student, performer, and committee member who played a part. Every late night and every rehearsal made this possible.

CDE freshmen meet the clubs behind campus life

The annual NUS Student Life Fair made its return, and our CDE freshmen were out exploring the clubs that keep student life buzzing, including CDE-affiliated groups like CDE Club, Bitscraps, Calibur Robotics, MedTech and more! Our CDE students shared about what their clubs are all about, and the energy they hope to see in new members.  

Vice President (External) of CDE Club, Zhang Luoxi (Year 3, Robotics and Machine Intelligence) shared, “At CDE Club, we organise student life events, welfare initiatives, and even career-related workshops for CDE students. If you’re interested in leaving a positive impact on your peers, and have any bright ideas, come join us and bring those ideas to life!”  

President of Calibur Robotics, Yang Zuoquan (Year 2, Mechanical Engineering) said, “Calibur Robotics is made up of a bunch of super passionate students from various disciplines focused on building combat robots. We’re looking for students who are self-motivated, curious, and excited to build various subsystems that come together as one working system.”  

President of Bitscraps, Ravisankar Viswanathan (Year 4, Computer Engineering) shared, “Bitscraps is all about electronics repair and sustainability – giving donated devices a second life through reuse and repurposing. Through collaborations with external organisations, we also pass these repaired electronics to those who need them most. We want new members who are enthusiastic and eager to give old electronics new life in creative ways.”  

Director of Health X’perience, Fatimah Rehman (Year 4, Biomedical Engineering) expressed, “HealthX brings students from different disciplines such as engineering, computing, and business together to collaborate on healthcare innovation. Regardless of your background or experience level, we welcome you to build a network, tap on one another’s expertise, and work on projects together. Events Director of MedTech, Chantelle Tong (Year 3, Biomedical Engineering) explained, “MedTech is about turning ideas into action  bringing students from different disciplines together to design and build medical device prototypes that address real healthcare problems. Innovation and passion for medical technology are at the heart of what we do, so if you have an idea, just go for it!”  

Team CDE heads into the Inter-Faculty Games 2026

The Inter-Faculty Games (IFG) 2026 are officially on!

The opening ceremony kicked off with an energetic performance by NUS Wushu, followed by gravity-defying stunts from the cheerleading squadNUS Alpha Verve  

The stage welcomed sports committee members from each faculty, as armbands were ceremoniously passed from outgoing to incoming sports directors. All contingents then stood together for their oaths of sportsmanship. 

With a ceremonial flame lit by NUS President and Guest of Honour Professor Tan Eng Chye, IFG 2026 is now underway.  

Over the next six weeks, more than 3,000 athletes from across NUS will take part in over 30 sports, with this year’s theme “Chase The Fire, Claim The Glory” capturing the competitive spirit of the games. 

23 sports, 313 CDE athletes – we are going in big. From badminton and basketball to swimming, track and field and more, our athletes will be out there doing CDE proud. 

Sharing about his experience as this year’s CDE Sports Director, Andrew Ang (Year 3, Architecture) who oversees 48 captains and vice-captains as well as 30 committee members, said, “This role has taught me that leadership is not simply about being in charge. It is about taking responsibility for a community, recognising what can be improved, and taking the initiative to make it happen. I have also learnt that trusting others and allowing them to contribute and grow are just as important.” 

Vice Sports Director Gayle Peh (Year 2, Electrical Engineering) who manages event planning, coordination, and logistics shared, “I have learnt that to lead is to serve so that our athletes have the heart, confidence, and backing to give their all. Balancing my duties as the football captain along with my IFG responsibilities has built my confidence, resilience and communication skills, while showing me the value of teamwork.”
