EDIC's 2024 Highlights!!
2024 was a fruitful and exciting year for EDIC. This year, our Innovation and Design Programme (iDP) students have continued to excel in several local and international competitions!
Our NUS Team BumbleBee was the Champion at the Maritime RobotX Challenge, held from 3 to 9 November 2024 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, USA. Prior to this, they won first place in the Singapore AUV Challenge (SAUVC 2024), held from 5 to 8 April 2024, with AUV 4, their 2024 version of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle built from the ground up.
At this year’s Formula SAE Electric competition, held in Michigan, USA, from 12 to 15 June 2024, our NUS Formula SAE team clinched the overall 10th position. This was only their second year participating in this competition since changing from an internal combustion engine race car to an all-electric race car.
Team Calibur from NUS Calibur Robotics represented NUS in the RoboMaster University League 2024 from 13 to 19 June 2024. As the only team from Singapore, they competed well with 25 other teams from reputable universities in America, Japan, Canada, Mexico and Italy and won several challenges.
For our student teams working on satellite-related projects, they also garnered several awards. Our NUS LeoNUS Cansat Team achieved 9th position out of 83 participating teams in the International Cansat competition organised by the American Astronautical Society (AAS)), held from 6 to 9 June 2024 in Monterey, Virginia, USA!
A team of five iDP students from CDE2311 took part in the Advanced Category of the 17th International Space Challenge (ISC) 2024 and received the prestigious industry-recognised IDDK Award for their project “Satelab” project.
Our Year 3 students working on their year-long design project, entitled Species Assessment Mapper (SAM), were awarded the title of Overall Winner for the Advanced Category in the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Innovation Quest organised by Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Space Faculty in November 2024!
With strong support from partners, including the Division of Industrial Design, NUS Enterprise, the James Dyson Foundation, and the Singapore Science Park, our iDP Students Club successfully organised the IDEATE Make-a-thon 2024, which ended on 21 September 2024. The event featured a fantastic project showcase of students’ prototypes and engaging pitches. This year’s competition theme was “Innovating the Ordinary’ which aimed at challenging NUS students to envision and create innovative solutions that enhance our daily living.
We have also organised two well-received project showcases in 2024.
The iDP Project Showcase 2024 highlighted the work of the Class of 2024’s graduating students in the Innovation & Design Programme. Nearly 40 projects from about 100 final-year students spanned various themes such as healthcare, mobility, sustainability, smart living, intelligent systems, and immersive reality. More than 200 attendees, comprising members of the NUS community, industry partners, and the public, graced the event on 19 April 2024.
On 15 November 2024, the EDIC Project Showcase 2024 featured the work of our Year 3 students in the Innovation & Design Programme (iDP) and the second cohort of students in the Master of Science in Engineering Design & Innovation programme, who were completing their year-long design projects at the end of the Semester 1, AY2024/2025.
Our iDP students and teams have also continued their entrepreneurship journeys.
One such team, iDP students Dhanda Armaan (Chemical Engineering, Year 3) and Baid Samyak (Economics, Year 3), were awarded the Gold Award at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)-SINO One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2024 (International Student Track) on 4 October 2024. This award comes with a HKD$50,000 (~S$8,500) prize and collaboration opportunities at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.
We are also proud to announce that from a highly competitive pool of our budding entrepreneurs, the EDIC Entrepreneur Fellowship winners are teams Holicay and Altent Renewables!
Looking forward to even more student achievements in 2025!
Happy Holidays from the EDIC Team!
