Congratulations to our students from Teams U-Life and HaveAlr for winning first and second places for the IKEA Singapore Young Designers Award!
IKEA Singapore Young Designer Award was launched in 2014 for students in tertiary institutions to showcase their design ideas to create a better life at home. Over the years, the competition evolved and young student talents in Singapore were challenged to inspire change behaviour to help address issues regarding climate change and its impact.
The design challenge: Imagine a future without food waste
Do you have a great idea that can inspire and encourage the way we produce or consume food to reduce its wastage?
Your challenge:
How can we design a future without food waste?
Winner: U-Life Team
Darren Lim (ME/iDP)
Ho Min Kent (ME/iDP)
Mitchell Chan (ME)
Our design is centered around modularity and simplicity. The circular node design ensures that our UV light can reach all surrounding food produce. By using recycled PLA, we are not only able to reduce food waste, but also plastic waste as well. This echoes with our team’s vision of creating a sustainable future. The silicon adhesive enables the U-life to be easily attached onto most surfaces. From rural farms to high tech refrigerators, the U-life can be implemented in various settings.
