ISE Introduction

For a brief introduction on Industrial and Systems Engineering, please watch the following video:

What ISE is all about

Below is a video describing one of our recent projects where simulation is used to evaluate and improve design and operations.

Career Prospects

Our graduates are highly sought after in the corporate world as reflected in the annual Graduate Employment Survey (GES), where our graduates consistently report high employment rates (96.5%) and salaries (mean salary $4,451).

The GES report can be downloaded here.

Due to the versatility in their training, our graduates find employment across different sectors. The following breakdown is based on a recent survey:

As the technology sector continues to grow, our graduates are increasingly finding employment in technology companies as well (for example, see recent CNA article).

Systems Design Project

A key feature of our program is that all our graduates will undertake a nine-month project where they will be attached to a company as consultants to study and analyse an actual industrial problem. The students will work closely with a company representative to understand the problem and develop practical solutions to address it. At the end of the project, students will present their findings and recommendations to the company’s management. Through this project, our students demonstrate the value that they can bring to an organization. It is not uncommon to hear of students receiving job offers at the end of their projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Industrial and Systems Engineering?

Industrial and Systems Engineering is about solving problems, making decisions and optimising processes. Our graduates are taught technical skills, like applied mathematics and computer science, as well as the business mind-set, to approach problems in a holistic way. See video at the top of this webpage for further elaboration and examples.

What classes do I need to take as an ISE student?

Can ISE undergraduates do a minor?

Yes. Students can be admitted to minor programmes at the point of admission to NUS, or by applying/declaring to the relevant Faculties/Schools no later than the end of the fifth semester of study.

More information available here.

Can ISE undergraduates do a double-degree?

Yes. Students can be admitted to double degree programmes at the point of admission to NUS or apply for a double degree programme by the end of their first year (recommended).

Student Club

Hi there! We are from the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Club and here is a list of frequently asked questions that might answer one of your burning questions about student life here in ISE:

How’s life like as an ISE student?

ISE is more than just a course; we’re a close family here! Look forward to making friends in our close-knit community. Seniors are always friendly and approachable, and always willing to extend a helping hand to their juniors! The ISE Club works to promote student welfare as well. Look forward to student life events such as ISE Freshman Orientation Camp, ISE Night Cycling, welfare giveaways and so on!

What is the ISE Club?

ISE Club is a student run organisation, consisting of student volunteers from within ISE. The Club is a sub-club of Engin Club, and works to improve student life within ISE. The Club also serves as the voice of the ISE undergraduates. Each year, ISE Club plans for an exciting line up of events! If you think you’ve got what it takes

I don’t have friends that are applying for ISE with me… What’s the best way to meet and make friends with those in my batch?

ISE Freshmen Orientation Camp is happening from 22-25 June and that’s definitely the best way to get to know others from your cohort. Follow our instagram at @nus_ise for more information!

How is the work-life balance in ISE?

Just like any other course, we can’t deny that school work gets tough (especially when exam period is approaching), but it is entirely up to you and your time management.

Do I get to experience studying overseas as an ISE student?

Definitely! There are summer school programmes that one can sign up for if interested, as well as the usual student exchange programme to schools around the world.

What about internship experiences?

Yes, of course! Every ISE student has to complete either a Vacation Internship Program, or a 6 month Industrial Attachment.

Do I need to know how to code?

No, there is no prerequisite to know how to code; everything will be taught.

I have more questions… Where can I find someone to talk to?

Hit us up on our Instagram @nus_ise (https://instagram.com/nus_ise)! Check our story this week to post a question; alternatively, feel free to slide into our DMs to chat with our undergraduates!
