Congrats to Asst Prof Shin Sunmi for being awarded the University of California San Diego (UCSD) 2020 Chancellor’s Dissertation Medal!

The award recognises outstanding doctoral research at UCSD. Dr Shin Sunmi is one awardee from the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering, of where she’s an alumna. Award recipients were also recognised at UC San Diego’s 2020 Virtual Commencement held on Saturday June 13, 2020.

About the Award

The Chancellor’s Dissertation Medal was inaugurated in Spring 2013 to recognize outstanding doctoral research. Recipients of this prestigious award are chosen based upon the quality of academic research as determined by the impact of the research to the field and/or department; the insight, originality, and creativity shown by the author; the effectiveness of the writing, clarity, and organization of the thesis; and the soundness of the methodology and quality of the data (when applicable).

 


Dr Shin Sunmi joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore as a Research Assistant Professor in August 2019. She received her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from UC San Diego in 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Renkun Chen, and her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Hanyang University in 2011 and 2014, respectively. She specializes in an experimental investigation on fundamental nanoscale heat transport for thermal management and development of personalized thermo-regulators and energy harvesting devices using thermoelectric energy conversion. Her research interests include a multidisciplinary approach for efficient and active energy technologies across mechanical and electrical engineering and materials science. She was a selected participant in ‘The Rising Stars Women in Engineering Workshop’ in 2018.
