Mechanical Systems Design Project (ME4101B)

The Mechanical Systems Design Project is a capstone design course where students work in a team (with 3 to 4 members) to solve real-world engineering problems from our industry partners. These projects could involve a design of a product, a component, an assembly or a system.

Students who selected ME4101B and have been assigned a project will not be allowed to drop the ME4101B course and replace it with ME4101A.

Key tasks: understanding and defining the problem, producing suitable design solutions, fabrication, testing and modifying the original prototype (if any), or coming up with a new prototype, that solves the problem statement.

Learning points: communicating with the client (sponsoring company), understanding and tailoring the product/solution to suit the client’s wishes and needs and project management.

Recommended for students who wish to go into the industry, work in teams, or are interested in design.

If 2 or more groups select the same project, all groups will have to compete for it by giving a 5-minute presentation to the company. The company will decide which group the project will be awarded to.

Final-Year Project (FYP) / BEng Dissertation

FYP is a 1-year long project undertaken during the students’ final year of studies, and could involve one or more of the following:

  • Laboratory Investigation
  • Computing and analysis
  • Software development
  • Design
  • Product development
  • Field testing and instrumentation
  • Feasibility/case studies
  • Hybrid (i.e. mix of experiment and theoretical, or experimental and numerical/software)

It may be possible to propose your own FYP, often as a continuation of your design project, UROP or arising from your internship. Click here if you would like to propose your own FYP.

For current ME students: Please click here for more information on timelines, forms, and other resources.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)

UROP is an individual academic research project you would undertake typically over two semesters or during the Special Term* anytime after your first semester, but before your final year. Successful completion of UROP counts as a 4-Unit Unrestricted Elective (UE) course. UROP is recommended if you are on the Research-focused Pathway (RfP) (cohorts AY19/20 and AY20/21), but equally so if you simply wish to learn the skills of independent research. You may be supervised by a professor within the ME Department, or you may choose a project in another department, allowing you exposure to a different engineering discipline.

*Special Term fees apply if you choose to be on UROP over this period.
