Research Degrees (MEng / PhD / EngD)

(From AY2023/2024 onwards, ALL applicants applying to the Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) programme are required to submit their GRE scores.  An aggregate minimum score of 320 (Verbal & Quantitative total) is set for the GRE and a minimum score of 3.5 is set for the Analytical (A) section.)

Our research-based degree programmes incorporate a coursework component as part of the academic requirements. MEng and PhD students are required to read at least 4 and 6 graduate-level courses, respectively.

  1. Option to S/U courses, with effect from Semester 2 AY2016/2017: Students (PhD/MEng) can only S/U courses they took that semester.
  2. S/U up to 4 Units per semester (subject to student’s balance availability).
  3. MEng – up to 4 Units can be S/U
  4. PhD – excluding ME5666, up to 8 Units can be S/U; with ME5666, up to 4 Units can be S/U.
    i.e. If PhD student takes ME5666, can S/U one ME5000 course; if PhD student is not taking ME5666, can SU two ME5000 courses.
  5. S/U allowed:
    • All ME4000 courses and ME5000 courses (including OT5102, OT5301, OT5302, OT5303, OT5304 and OT5305).
  6. S/U not allowed:
    • All ME6000 courses.
    • All non-ME4000, non-ME5000 and non-ME6000 courses (i.e. all cross-faculties and cross-departments courses).
  7. Supervisor’s approval is first required before a student is allowed to S/U courses.

English Courses

Students must obtain a Grade C and above in the Graduate English Courses if they do not qualify for waiver of English Language requirement. The results for the Diagnostic English Test (DET) will determine the entry level of English course to be admitted (Basic or intermediate).

All PhD and EngD students must take NG5001 and achieve a minimum C grade.
