Dynamics and Vibration
Overview
The Dynamics and Vibration Laboratory focuses on both teaching and research in the areas of noise and vibration. It supports hands-on learning through experiments in vibration measurement and acoustic testing, using advanced sensors and data acquisition systems. While the teaching component primarily covers topics such as the spring-mass-damper system, research activities are mainly directed toward noise analysis, reduction, and control, addressing challenges across various engineering applications.

Fluid Mechanics
Overview
The Fluid Mechanics group conducts courses and research in Aerodynamics, Bio-Fluid Dynamics, Experimental and Computational Fluid Mechanics. The research activities encompass a mix of basic, applied and developmental research. Basic research is carried out both in furtherance of the personal research interests of the staff and in support of ongoing applied and developmental research. To foster close links with the local industry, a significant part of the applied and developmental research has been carried out in collaboration with the industry and government bodies.
Highlights
- Complex-Structure Fluids
We are currently focused on developing particle-based simulation methods applied to various multiphase flows, in particular the sediment dispersion in ocean scale (several kms length scale), and its interactions with buried infrastructure. Experimental investigations of the complex behaviour of colloids and droplet suspensions represent an important area of interest in our group. See here for more details.

Impact Mechanics
Overview
The Impact Mechanics Laboratory is equipped with facilities for dynamic materials testing, low velocity structural and product drop tests, ballistic projectile penetration tests and computational simulation of dynamic processes. We specialise in research and testing and have provided services to industry by acting as consultants, undertaking material and mechanical testing and analysis and conducting short courses for engineers.

Manufacturing
Overview
Faculty members of the Manufacturing Group are actively involved in research and teaching in wide areas of manufacturing and their focus involves in training students and researchers by introducing value-added manufacturing through information technology (IT) applications and process innovation. These include novel processes based on additive manufacturing or 3D printing, ultra-precision and micro-machining, and advanced research in computer integrated systems facilitated by data and communication technology, internet-enabled smart manufacturing, augmented and virtual reality, multi-scale process and material modelling/simulation, and machine/deep learning. Faculty members are also actively involved in automotive engineering projects, notably the FSAE race cars.

Solid Mechanics / Experimental Mechanics
Overview
The Experimental Mechanics Laboratory was set up in 1969 when it was then called the Strength of Materials Laboratory dealing mainly with strain gauging, photoelasticity and moiré interferometry. Since then, it has evolved into research in Experimental Stress Analysis, Numerical Stress Analysis, Image Processing Technique, BioMechanics and BioMaterials. At the same time, it has also provide strain gauging facilities, materials testing services and laboratory support for undergraduate, postgraduate students, research staff and academic staff.

Thermal Systems
Overview
The Thermal Systems Group consists of the following:

Research Areas and Projects
The group’s research interests include thermodynamics as well as heat and mass transfer with focus on energy, drying processes, micro and bio-thermal systems and thermal management of electronic equipment. Current research areas encompasses explosive boiling and transport processess in steady and unsteady impinging and opposing jets.
Energy related research activities include modelling and performance of absorption and adsorption chillers, compact heat exchangers for waste heat recovery and dehumidification, co-generation systems, ice storage for cooling and air-conditioning and hot water heating.
Research in micro and bio-thermal systems consists of combustion in the micro-scale, micro-thermophotovoltaic power generators, solid propellant micro-thrustors and miniaturisation of electro-adsorption chillers. Projects on bone drilling and cryo-surgery and cryoprobe development have been initiated while projects in heat transfer analysis in electronic packaging, moisture migration and its effects on electronic packaging, electronic cooling using phase change materials, thermo-mechanical reliability analysis of integrated chip packages, and thermal analysis in the wafer level packaging have been proposed to address the concerns of thermal management in electronic packaging in the ever growing electronic industry.
Facilities
In terms of infrastructure, the group possesses laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art apparatus and data acquisition systems to support projects undertaken by students and staff. They are Thermal Process Laboratory 1 & 2, Energy Conversion Laboratory and Air-conditioning Laboratory. In addition to these, research work is also carried out in the Department’s Microsystems Technology Lab.
