Dr Vivek Premandhan wins top prize in PIER71 Smart Port Challenge 2019

NUS Mechanical Engineering Research Fellow, Dr Vivek Kolladikkal Premandhan, has won the top prize in the 2019 Smart Port Challenge (SPC) Grand Final with his start-up Dravam, beating 23 other very strong and credible teams from MIT (USA) , Denmark, Netherlands, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Dr Vivek Premandhan founded Dravam, a deep-tech start-up under NUS’ Graduate Research Innovation Programme (GRIP). Dravam services the maritime sector with its innovative solutions on Online Fuel Quality Monitoring, a real-time early detection system for marine fuel, installed seamlessly onto a vessel. This patented solution is aimed at ensuring the quality of the fuel that is bunkered and addresses the industry’s need for quicker bunker quality testing.

Port Innovation Ecosystem Reimagined @ BLOCK71 (PIER71)’s Smart Port Challenge, organised by Maritime Port Authority of Singapore and NUS Enterprise, is an annual innovation competition for global technology start-ups to address challenges put forth by the maritime corporates in Singapore. These innovation opportunities are identified through a series of ideation workshops with the commitments for the maritime corporates to adopt the solutions if found suitable. The challenge focuses on the domain areas of port operations, shipping and ship management, maritime logistics and services. The competition encourages start-ups with maritime focus to formulate ideas, connect with industry personnel and pitch to investors. PIER71 is also a MPA accelerator which incubates, mentors and helps fund technology that can be of use to the maritime sector.
