Congratulations to our NUS Mechanical Engineering undergraduates for winning 2nd place at the Sembcorp Marine Green Wave Environment Competition! The award was presented to the team, Team Eco-box, by Guest-of-Honour Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, during the award ceremony held on 2 February 2018 at the Marina Mandarin Singapore. As part of their 3rd year design project funded by the NUS Office of Environmental Sustainability, the team had designed a reusable lunchbox rental machine, in hopes of reducing the use of disposable takeaway containers in the NUS campus. Inspiration was taken from a lunchbox rental booth set up at the Arts Canteen (The Deck), but the endeavour was manpower-intensive. Thus an automated solution was developed to enable the community to borrow and return the reusable lunchboxes at their own convenience. The team’s prototype was put on trial at Raffles Hall (student hall of residence) to much positive feedback.
