ONG Cheng Huat

Associate Professor (Practice)

Applied Mechanics

Dr Ong Cheng Huat joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NUS, as an Associate Professor in October 2019, under the framework of the DSO-NUS Joint Appointment Agreement. He spends the equivalent of 1 working day per week in NUS ME. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2000. Since then, he has been with DSO National Laboratories, and is currently the Lab Director for the Structural Materials Lab, spearheading and managing the development of various types of polymeric composite materials for defence applications. His areas of interest are a) Composite manufacturing techniques (RTM, VARI, Auto-Clave, Filament Winding, etc.) for structural applications; b) Materials characterization to establish physical and functional properties for the design and processing of composite materials/structures; c) Composite structures design, fabrication, and testing; d) Damage progression (both modelling and experiment) of composite structure for the establishment of residual strength and life under both static and dynamic loadings; e) NDT for defects identification and characterization for composite sandwich; f) Functional architected materials.
