NUS-Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Joint PHD Programme

The NUS-SJTU Joint PhD Programme is a full-time programme in partnership with NUS and SJTU. SJTU will be the home university. The programme duration is 4 years.

1. Admission Requirements

Note that possession of these qualifications does not guarantee admission. Admission decisions are based on multiple considerations, including the number and quality of applicants and the capacity of the programme applied to.

Applicants should have

  • Master’s degree, or equivalent
  • English Proficiency

2. English Requirement

TOEFL/IELTS/GRE Tests

Academic work at NUS and SJTU Engineering cannot be completed satisfactorily without adequate proficiency in English. This point is deliberately emphasized because graduate students at NUS and SJTU Engineering submit regular reports, take written examinations and are expected to participate actively in classroom discussions. Applicants may demonstrate their English proficiency by means of TOEFL/IELTS AND GRE test scores. Applicants must be able to submit a TOEFL/IELTS AND GRE as part of the application.

Candidates are to obtain the following minimum scores:

  • GRE score of 320 (Verbal & Quantitative Total) and 3.5 (Analytical), AND
  • TOEFL score of 85 for Internet Based Test (IBT), or IELTS score of 6.0

 

Tests score submission validity period:

  • GRE Validity: 5 years (after test date)
  • TOEFL Validity: 2 years (from date of test)
  • IELTS Validity: 2 years (from date of score issued)

Applicants who graduated from English-medium universities and have yet to sit for the tests, may be required at the discretion of the Head of Department or Vice-Dean (Graduate Programmes),  and undergo such tests to assess their suitability for University study and to appear for interviews.

4. Graduation Requirement

Requirements for this joint PhD degree of Biomedical Engineering:

(1)   16 SJTU course credits;
(2)   a Ph.D. thesis defense;
(3)   Journal publications.
