Exploring new application of Dyson’s Motor technology
Dyson’s mission is to engineer solutions to problems that others ignore. It began with one man and one stubborn idea – James Dyson, who persevered through 5,127 prototypes to solve the problem of clogged vacuum cleaner bags and the loss of suction. With it, he had invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner with patented Cyclone technology that uses centrifugal force to separate dust and dirt from the airflow.
In 1999, Dyson engineers and scientists started working on new technology that would prove just as revolutionary as the first bagless vacuum. A motor so small and power dense that it could generate power never seen before in a cord-free vacuum. It would mean completely rethinking existing technology, and unlocking a whole new format of vacuum.
Dyson digital motor technology has greatly advanced since then; it now sits at the heart of many game-changing machines – the Dyson PencilVac, Fluffycones cleaner, the Dyson V11 Absolute cord-free vacuum cleaner, the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, the Dyson Airwrap styler, and the Dyson Airblade hand dryer, to name a few. The small, light, and yet powerful Dyson motor has revolutionized the way people clean their homes, and care for their hair and their personal well-being.
Through this course, you will put your innovation and problem-solving muscles to the test. You will work in groups to tackle the opportunity statement, and explore new and innovative application for one of Dyson’s patented digital motors.

Some of the questions that the team will be looking at are:
- What are the problems that could potentially be solved by applying this motor/technology?
- What are the potential market areas that this motor can be applied to?
- What are the further innovations or considerations needed to make it viable in these other areas?
- What are the potential business models?
- How will the technical and business viability be assessed and validated?
Dyson motors are generally used for vacuum cleaners, hand dryers and hair dryers. This study mainly focuses on the ASEAN market. Students will look at the customers’ habits, culture and potential spending. A home, personal or light industry application is preferred.
As part of the course experience, you will also be given access to Dyson engineers, who will be able to provide mentorship and give valuable feedback to validate your ideas.

This opportunity requires students to have a foundational understanding of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Data Science to ensure the proposed project is feasible. Having some knowledge of Mechanical Engineering will enable students to explore practical ways to integrate the motor into a functional system. An understanding of Electrical Engineering will assist in effectively connecting and controlling the motor at specific speeds. Familiarity with Data Science will help students analyze market trends and inform design decisions using data-driven techniques.
