Programme Lead

Professor Virginia Cha will lead the module.

Overview

This course is intended for fresh engineering graduates, as a launchpad into leadership roles. Leadership is not just about power and management. The leader, the follower, the context, and the interactions amongst all these elements must be considered. This course introduces the basic concepts of leadership, and discusses them in the context of – leading oneself for being an effective engineer or entrepreneur, to leading small teams of specialists. Topics related to the latest leadership theories, self-leadership, managing emotions, ethics, change, and diversity will be covered.

Module Objective

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Articulate the pros and cons of the different leadership theories and approaches.
  2. Clearly differentiate between leading and managing.
  3. Understand own leadership abilities, and to learn new leadership skills to Leading Self.
  4. Understand and practice the skills necessary for leading organizations.
  5. Learn and practice the 3 dimensions of Engineering Leadership: Lead by passing along technical expertise.
  6. Learn and practice the 3 dimensions of Engineering Leadership: Lead by collaborating with others.
  7. Learn and practice the 3 dimensions of Engineering Leadership: Lead by translating technical ideas into innovation.

Grading

Students will be assessed based on their team presentation, essay, projects and overall participation. Successful students will receive 4MCs for this module, registered under MT5922 Concepts and Application of Engineering Leadership.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module.

How the module works

This module exposes students in the College of Design and Engineering to the latest theories of leadership and discusses the application of leadership in context of engineering especially focusing on the challenges faced by engineering leaders e.g. leading oneself, managing following emotions, developing inspiring goals, leading change, and so on. This module pays special attention on self-leadership skills, in order to equip the students to develop into effective engineers or entrepreneurs. It aims to foster deeper understanding of leadership theories. It covers topics beyond self-leadership to issues of emotions, ethics, change, and diversity.

Registration for non-ISEM students

As this module is parked under the Industrial Systems & Engineering Management Department (ISEM), graduate students should utilise this [Submit Module Requests] function to request for non-programme requirement modules (i.e. cross-faculty modules). The request will go through a two-step approval process: it is first routed to the home department for decision before approved requests are routed to the module host(s) for final assessment. There are two Rounds of Module Requests each semester. However, a second request can only be submitted through the function after the first one has been concluded. For guidance on this see page 10 of the User Guide.

Schedule

Classes take place on every AY, Semester 1, Thursdays, 6.00-9.00PM at E2-03-02/03 (TechHub).
