Exploring opportunities for fabric-based exoskeletons.

ArmasTec is a developer of soft fabric exoskeletons for reducing the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, aimed at improving quality of life and increasing sustainability of the workforce. Despite widespread automation, manual labour is still required in various operations due to space or dexterity constraints, leading to increased incidences of work-related musculoskeletal disorders such as lower back injuries. Based on information from the US National Safety Council and the US Department of Labor & Statistics, it is estimated that lower back pain can cost a company of 1000 workers up to SGD 2.2 million per year due to lost productivity and direct healthcare costs.

To tackle this, ArmasTec has developed the AireLevate Logistics exosuit, designed to help reduce strain and fatigue in the lower back, thereby reducing the risk of lower back injuries. The fabric-based exosuit uses compressed air and soft artificial muscles to help support the torso and push it back up when the user bends over, making a 20kg load feel like only 10kg on your lower back. For more information, visit https://www.armastec.com.

The Airelevate Logistics exosuit has already seen success in the manufacturing and hotel industries, such as Strategic Marine and Park Royal, where it is helping shipyard workers and housekeeping staff respectively to protect their lower backs when moving heavy items.

Opportunity sought:

ArmasTec would like to identify potential opportunities for our soft exoskeleton technologies. The product has already been released with success in Singapore in the manufacturing and hotel industries. As we are looking to expand our reach, we would like to explore opportunities in other industries in Singapore, as well as in US and Europe.

Some of the questions that the team will be looking at are:

  • Other than the lower back, what other joints/body parts would benefit the most from support from a soft exoskeleton for customers in the manufacturing, construction, and repair and maintenance industries?  What would the solution look like?
    • Note that the solution for the exosuits should not include large rigid parts and ideally no metal parts. Any electronics should be removable so that the exosuit can be washed.
  • What is the potential for a sensorised suit (for monitoring activities such as number of lifts, non-ergonomic posture etc) for these same industries?
  • What would the return on investment (ROI) be for these two solutions and how can it be calculated/maximized?
  • What would the return on investment (ROI) be for these two solutions and how can it be calculated/maximized?
  • What would be their barriers to adoption?
  • What are the potential new business models?

HP

Explore market opportunities for Small Microfluidic Channels using Inkjet Technology in food, water treatment and healthcare

HP is a global technology company that operates in more than 170 countries. Through our portfolio of printers, PCs, 3D printers, mobile devices, solutions, and services, we engineer experiences that amaze.

The technological basis of inkjet printing, one of HP’s cornerstone businesses, is Active Microfluidics. Microsecond-long electrical pulses sent through micron-size resistors release large amounts of thermal energy within very small volumes and vaporize surrounding fluid. Those vapor bubbles, expanding, expel ink droplets through microscale nozzles. The droplets collectively form an image on paper.

The same thermal vapor bubbles can be repurposed to perform other useful functions: push fluids through micron-wide channels, mix fluids in microscale chambers, block flow in selected spots, switch flow between different outputs, locally heat fluids, and more. Importantly, all these devices can be integrated together with densities of 10-100 devices per mm2. Additionally, HP has developed scalable ways to deliver multiple fluids from macroscopic containers to any point in the system.

This article explains how Inkjet technology can be used in various ways: Inkjets Are for More Than Just Printing
