CFI Singapore and National Observation and Research Station of Coastal Ecological Environments (Macau) Sign MoU to Explore Collaboration in Coastal Protection and Environmental Research

The Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute (CFI) Singapore at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the National Observation and Research Station of Coastal Ecological Environments at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore potential areas of collaboration in research and development. The MoU was signed on 13 January 2025 by Prof. Adrian Law, Executive Director of CFI Singapore, and Prof. Ma Yibing, Director, National Observation and Research Station of Coastal Ecological Environments.

The agreement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at addressing pressing challenges in coastal protection, flood resilience, and environmental sustainability. By leveraging the complementary expertise of both institutions, the collaboration seeks to advance innovative solutions for climate adaptation and resilience.

Key Areas of Collaboration

The partnership will focus on engaging in core research areas under CFI Singapore’s purview, including:

  • joint research projects of mutual interests in the Areas of Interest;
  • visits by staff and students for discussion and participation in joint research and development activities, seminars and conferences;
  • exchange of scientific, academic and technical information and appropriate academic materials and other information of mutual interest;

This collaboration also opens opportunities for joint research projects, knowledge exchange programs, and academic partnerships to foster talent development and contribute to global efforts in tackling climate change.

Prof. Adrian Law highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating, “This MoU underscores our shared commitment to advancing research and innovation in coastal resilience. By joining forces with MUST, we can accelerate the development of impactful solutions that address complex environmental challenges.”

Prof. Ma Yibing added, “We are excited to partner with CFI Singapore to promote joint research and development activities of mutual interest and benefit in the areas of exploration of avenues and initiatives to promote technology translation for coastal protection and flood management solutions for urban and land-scarce coastlines in accordance with their respective needs and objectives.”

The MoU sets the stage for deeper engagement between CFI Singapore and MUST, enhancing the collective ability to develop transformative solutions for climate-resilient communities. Both institutions look forward to working closely to realize the shared vision of a sustainable coastal protection and flood resilience.
