Flexible Seawall for Coastal Reservoir and Coastal Defence Systems in Singapore
This project aims to strengthen Singapore’s coastal defence systems by developing an innovative and flexible seawall design. Unlike conventional bunds and breakwaters, the proposed system offers greater cost efficiency, adaptability, and sustainability through the application of intelligent engineering solutions.
Research Goals
- Develop a new type of flexible seawall integrated with coastal reservoirs to strengthen Singapore’s coastal defence infrastructure.
- Enhance resilience, adaptability, and sustainability of coastal protection systems through innovative engineering design.
Why This Matters
- Reduces construction costs and provides greater flexibility for future coastal redevelopment.
- Minimises the use of traditional materials like concrete and earth, making the seawall more environmentally friendly and reducing ecological disturbance.
- Integrates nature-based design elements that support marine biodiversity and align with environmental sustainability goals.
- Enables adjustable seawall heights, ensuring long-term adaptability to rising sea levels and changing coastal conditions.
Latest Research Highlights
- Optimized the flexible seawall design and conducted scaled model tests, validating its feasibility and revealing key insights into structural behavior under extreme marine conditions.
- Conducted strength, aging, and fouling tests on materials in seawater to assess durability, supporting the feasibility of the composite membrane design for the flexible barrier.
