Shore Protection with Integrated Nature-based Solutions – Meta v2-p1

Shore Protection with Integrated Nature-based Solutions – Meta

This project explores how combining natural ecosystems with engineering solutions can make coastal protection more sustainable. Potential sites for hybrid ‘green-grey’ solutions are also identified.

Research Goals

  • Build a systematic understanding of hybrid coastal protection solutions globally.
  • Identify optimal ‘green–grey’ combinations suited to Singapore’s coastal conditions.
  • Determine priority sites for implementing hybrid solutions to maximise protection and ecosystem benefits.

Why This Matters

  • Drives innovative, cost-effective coastal protection solutions that integrate ecological restoration to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services.
  • Promotes sustainable, long-term hybrid approaches for Singapore by incorporating natural elements into coastal defences.
  • Provides insights that support national initiatives, including the Singapore Green Plan 2030, to mitigate climate impacts and restore coastal ecosystems.

Latest Research Highlights

Global Insights on Hybrid Shore Protection
  • Conducted geospatial and meta-analyses of environmental conditions and project outcomes, providing a global perspective on hybrid coastal protection approaches.
Predictive Habitat Modelling
  • Modelled species distributions under current and future climate scenarios to generate maps of habitat suitability for coastal ecosystems.
Identifying Potential Integration Sites
  • Using ecological and geospatial data to select potential sites for hybrid shoreline protection, supporting future design and implementation efforts.
