01 Remembering a landmark, with the landmark.

This project required us to work with the salvaged wood from the old National Stadium to create something personal yet relatable. The artefact created was based on memories.

Pencils are a basic medium that we use to help us recall and remember. Using the wood to make charcoal pencils draws a strong connection between individual memories and the common location. Each pencil depicts something uniquely personal and open-ended.

02 Ashtray

Unlike a traditional ashtray, this ashtray starts out as a solid balsa wood cylinder. As a user stubs his cigarette out, an indentation is made, causing the surface to recede. This slow diminishing of the wood mimics the pathway of an addiction. It steadily pulls you in, making it increasingly difficult to escape. This piece also becomes more functional as an ashtray over time, mirroring how as one falls deeper into an addiction, they require it to function.

03 A Letterbox Marketplace

Aimed at promoting neighbourliness in a HDB public housing environment, a marketplace system was developed to nudge one into contact with their neighbours.

This involved changing the letterbox front into one that dually functions as an organised noticeboard. The letterbox area was chosen as it has a language of exchange, encourages vertical communication and the fact that each unit number makes notices personal.

Residents can put up notices of goods and services that they need or can offer to their fellow residents. It reduces transport and storage issues of items, saving time and money.

This system not only creates a bridge of goods but, more importantly, conversation. It opens opportunities for interaction between neighbours—people in one’s immediate vicinity that one might not normally converse with.
