The Symposium on VLSI Technology and Circuits is an annual gathering of global industry players and universities to share the latest developments in semiconductor and microelectronics research.

The theme for this year’s conference, held from June 12-17, was “Technology and Circuits for the Critical Infrastructure of the Future”, proposed against the background of ongoing global shortages of semiconductor chips.

Assistant Professor Gong’s team presented seven papers at the conference showcasing the team’s progress and innovations from materials and devices to integration technology and applications in photonics and electronics.

Of these, a paper on ferroelectric memory by NUS PhD students Zhou Zuopo and Jiao Leming was presented with the Best Demo Paper Award.

Additionally, a paper on IGZO nanowire transistors by NUS PhD student Han Kaizhen was presented with the Best Student Paper Award for the 2021 conference.

Asst Prof Gong said: “Seven papers could be the highest number presented from one university research group in the 42-year history of the conference. Each year, only one Best Student Paper Award and one Best Demo Paper Award are presented in the category of technology based on the quality of the paper and the performance during the presentation or demo session. These achievements and the two awarded papers are highly significant and demonstrate the strong presence of NUS in the global semiconductor research community.”
