News & Activities

New ECE graduate student council’s first meeting:

The ECE Graduate Student Council (GSC) 2020-21 committee held its first yearly meeting of the on 25st January. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Yan Xu, with all new GSC members. Covid-19 precautions are strictly followed during the meeting.

The GSC discussed the details of the upcoming annual ECE Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) for Graduate Students of the ECE Department. The one-day symposium will take place on Friday, Feb.26. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Microwave & RFID”. Open to ECE students, the GSS will give attendees the opportunity to showcase their research.

After completing the transfer of the positions of the old members and the work arrangements for the new members. We had a relaxing tea party at the end of the meeting, in order to make everyone familiar with each other as soon as possible. Restricted by the epidemic, this activity was not carried out collectively by all members, but in the form of sub-groups. Before the tea party started, we assigned the more familiar members to different groups, interspersed with the less familiar new members, so that everyone could get to know each other better.

The whole tea party lasted about 1 hour, and everyone had a pleasant and full exchange. The new members clarified their job responsibilities by asking questions. At the same time, the old classmates also shared their previous work experience and problems encountered. So far, the first plenary meeting of this semester was a complete success and the feedback received from GSC members was quite encouraging.

The GSC 2020-21 management committee consisted of Yan Xu (President), Zhou Yulong (Vice President) Luo Haorui (Vice President), Zhang Jingyuan (Treasurer), and Wang Jiahao (Secretary). And the GSC 2020-21 executive committee contains Zeng Qihang, Li Chenhui, Li Yi, Zhao Liwei, Liu Yakun, Zhang Bo, Kuang Yu, Hu Wenrui, Qiu Kunpeng, Li Huagen, and Yang Dongsheng. All the GSC members are Ph.D. students from ECE department.

Industry Visits:

The Graduate Student Council (GSC) 2018-19 committee organized a number of engaging activities for the graduate students of Department of ECE. This included the annual Bowling Gala and a half-day Microwave & RF Graduate Symposium to replace the annual Graduate Students’ Symposium (GSS). However, the highlight of our activities were the first-ever Industry Visits organized by GSC.

Our first visit was to the SEAGATE Singapore Design Center at One-North on May 13. We got a phenomenal response from ECE graduate students in terms of registrations. The visit was very informative, with the Seagate staff guiding us to their processing & development clean room, vibration and drop test room as well as acoustic test room. We were also told about the end-to-end process leading to the production of a Seagate hard drive as well as the latest technologies that Seagate is working on. It was followed by a networking session with NUS alumni employed with Seagate, department heads as well as HR personnel. Students were also briefed about the current job and internship opportunities available at Seagate.

Our visit began with a welcome note and company presentation by their Senior R&D director who took us through the timeline of the company’s growth as well as their interesting engineering innovations. Subsequently, we were divided into two groups and taken for a demo tour. Our first stop was a room where we were shown a demo of the their latest 5G simulation software. Next, we were taken to their demo room and were shown an array of test and measurement equipment developed for digital signal analysis, video analysis, network analysis etc. This was followed by a networking afternoon tea where we mingled with the company staff and discussed about their work and potential career opportunities.
